CrucifixionPosted : 22 Apr, 2011 01:16 AMIs it just me, or does it seem ridiculous to you that after being flogged 39 times and nailed to a cross, a person would die of suffocation? I mean, I can understand it happening to someone who was crucified by being tied to the cross or maybe even just nailed, but someone who had just received 39 lashes too? Blood loss and shock or even a ruptured ventricular aneurysm as a result of the beating seems far more likely to me. After all, supposedly when they finished their 39 lashes, you could see the man's bowels and lungs since most all of their skin and muscle had been torn away... |

CrucifixionPosted : 22 Apr, 2011 04:22 AMYes, I agree; the medical cause of Jesus's death was probably His heart bursting. Which seems right in more ways than one. Especially since they would break the legs of those not dead yet so they would suffocate, Jesus had already died. |

CrucifixionPosted : 22 Apr, 2011 04:41 AMJesus said no one takes me life but I give it. When he breathed His last, I have always just thought regardless of the physical damamge, He 'gave up' His Spirit and His Father recieved it. |

CrucifixionPosted : 22 Apr, 2011 07:44 AMI have often thought the same thing. I did hear someone say (I think it was a preacher, or historian...dunno) that the Romans had crucifixion perfected to the point of causing as much suffering as possible for as long as possible before death. With the lashes, they knew exactly how many times, how hard, and where to hit so that the suffering was as much as a human could withstand without actually dying on the spot. Then, they knew just exactly how to nail a person to a cross so that they wouldn't die from the nails, but rather from suffocation. |

CrucifixionPosted : 22 Apr, 2011 07:59 AMWell, I've been doing a little research, and it appears that there was a skeleton found with a nail through the side of the ankle and not the foot itself. This would not only put the nail right through a major nerve bundle, but also give the body enough support to put the nails through the hands like traditionally was assumed. Incidentally, there's supposedly a nerve bundle in the palm as well. This would be unimaginably painful, as I'm sure you guessed. |

CrucifixionPosted : 25 Apr, 2011 10:08 PMWell shock is a process, and Jesus showed the symptoms (he was thirsty) But I can see dying of suffocation more likely. You're more likely to still have enough blood to live, but too little to continue lifting and dropping yourself to breath for long. I think the point of the 39 lashes (besides torturing) would be to weaken the person so much that it was everything they could do to breath. |
