Proverds 17 : 27 said A truely wise person uses few words , a person with understanding is even tempered..

Would someone help me better understand how to explain the meaning of this verse. I want to make sure when I talk with her, that I'm taking the text out of context.

Thanks

To me, using few words would mean that you've thought through the situation.

When we aren't even tempered, our emotions are running crazy, so we're more likely to act out in anger, fear, etc. Therefore, we make better decisions when our emotions are in check. I think the more practice you have at controlling those crazy emotions, the better you become at making decisions.

Does that even make any sense?! Haha! :)

Ok, I did not do a grammar check. That should say, not out of context.

Thx T. That's more of how I was thinking, I just couldn't figure out the way to say it.

Just thought of something else! :)

You could use an analogy!! :) Like...in suspense movies when the damsel in destress runs UPSTAIRS when she's trying to get away from the bad guy! As we're setting in a controlled environment, we know we would get away because we would have ran DOWNSTAIRS. Haha!

Any help? :)

That's a good interpretation Browneyes.

Maybe it could also mean that a wise man would choose his words carefully, and speak them calmy ,so to give them purpose, or emphasize his meaning.

I'm sure there are better explanations than mine, but that's my take on it.

That verse is part of a set, you need to keep them together to get the full context. The others are close to the meaning of the verse. Basically what it is saying is that a wise person thinks things through and only speaks up when they know the answer. In todays culture one is considered smart or enlightened if you ramble on speculating about the truth because the truth is irrelevant. But, a wise knows that there is such a thing as truth and will carefully seek it out before speaking.

Proverbs 17:27-28 (NASB)

27 He who restrains his words has knowledge, And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

28 Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.

Cobbler's right. I think too many times we hastily speak and then regret what we've said. _____________________________ Not sure why, but I feel led to share the following scriptures. _____________________________ Exodus 4: 10-12--------- And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? Or who maketh the dumb , or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

Kat,

Today some things are happening and I have to watch my words so very carefully. One misstatement or misconstrued utterance could be disastrous. I have been praying about the situation and extremely concerned. Your post and the subsequent answers have been a timely blessing.

Thank you.

Your translation is bad. Look at the verse in the KJV.
