Blast from the past!!! =)

Here is one of the first forum posts in Ask a Guy. I thought we could revisit....

By Trendyk:

Why do we have to ask?

Posted : 18 Feb, 2008 08:37 PM

As a christian girl raised in a good christian home i was taught that when it comes to dating, calling or any relationship step the guy is supposed to be the one to do that. But, when i ask christian guys and girls their views most often i get that it is ok for either person. I personally am confused, for this reason; the man in the bible is the head of the house as appointed by God. so, it would take that away from them when a girl takes charge and makes the first step correct? I just want to hear other points of view.

Don't call me---- If I want to talk I'll call you. (just kidding)

If you call and I don't want to talk--I'll let the answering machine get it.

Good point stegoodie! However, I think there are some times when we women "work a little" and y'all don't even know it! Haha! ;)

I prefer allowing the woman to make decisions about the relationship early on because I don't want to get ahead of her. I want her to be comfortable and not feel like things are moving too fast or too slow. As for the man being the head, he is the head in a marriage but not necessarily in a dating relationship. He may begin assuming the role of headship during an engagement in order to establish the nature of the marriage relationship before the marriage takes place.

The ancient Jews considered engaaged couples as married already at least to the extenet that an engaged man had get a divorce just like a married man would have to. Remember that after Mary became pregnant with Jesus , Joseph considered putting Mary away. This is something a married man would do but not a boyfriend or someone who is only courting or dating.

I'll agree with you in part, Thunder. In the very initial stages of meeting and getting to know one another, I can understand a man letting the woman lead to give her a sense of comfort and security.

However, once a couple has moved beyond that, if a man doesn't start taking on the leadership role in dating/courting/deepening of the relationship, then for me it would never get to the point of engagement as I would want to see evidence of those qualities before I consented to marry and not after.
