lobola (bride price)Posted : 19 Sep, 2008 11:40 AMlobola is a traditional south african dowry custom where by the man pays the family of his bride to be, for her hand in Marrige. the custom is aimed at bringing the two families together, fostering mutual respect, and indicating that the man is capable of supporting his wife financially and emotionally. traditionally the lobola payment was in cattle. however most urban couples have switched to using hard cold cash. the process of lobola negotiation can be long and complex and involves many members from both the bride and grooms extended families. often, to dispel the tensions between the families a bottle of brandy is placed on the table. this is usually not drunk. it is a simple gesture to welcome the guest family and make everyone feel more relaxed. lobola has some unintended negative effects. it has created a financial barrier for young men looking for brides. :( so with the little information given, what do you guys think about it? |

lobola (bride price)Posted : 3 Oct, 2008 08:48 PMDowry is alive and thriving here in the Western world also. Engagement rings. The brides family paying huge amounts for the wedding (in some cultures it's the woman's side that puts up the dowry in order to show that they are a family that you would want to be associated with). Don't knock it just because it's not your way. |
