What are your favorite Thanksgiving holiday traditions?

Our family watches all the football games and we bet on who will win. Whoevers wins the bet is exempt from cleaning up the dishes after dinner. After the games we have our own Turkey Bowl football game (not tackle of course). Those who cannot play have to serve as the cheerleaders. In the morning we head to a Homeless shelter to prepare a meal for the Homeless in Chicago. On Thanksgiving Eve we attend church.

My family doesn't really have any traditions... But, most years, I'll head on over to my parents' house early and snuggle up on their couch and watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Later in the day, I try to coax everyone into watching "Miracle on 34th Street" with me. And, yes, I know that completely goes against my anti-Santa stance, but my parents were very careful to explain to me that the movie was wrong about suggesting that Santa was real, so I never really thought of it in that way. Natalie Wood is so adorable, by the way. We don't watch football. My dad isn't really a sports person.

We always go to my grandparents house (they live in Florida, so we drive for 9 hours to get there, and then stay at their house from Wednesday through Sunday before driving the 9 hours back home). My grandma, mom, and aunt all work together to cook a huge Thanksgiving Dinner, we eat it around 1:00pm, and then we go to a late afternoon movie. The day after Thanksgiving, we usually brave the Black Friday crowds to get some bargain shopping done.

The rare years when we haven't been able to go down to my grandparents house...well, it's really boring. It just doesn't seem like Thanksgiving! I guess when my grandparents pass away, or my sisters get married (and me too, if that ever happens), we'll have to start some new traditions.

Up until a couple years ago I always had turkey, dressing, and the works. Beginning a couple years ago (or is it 3?) my brother, his pa-in-law and I would take a houseboat into the middle of Lake O' The Pines and fish for channel cat all night on Thanksgiving eve, then on Thanksgiving we have a big fish fry. Probably what the rest of America would be doing if the Indians and Pilgrims had eaten fish instead of turkey.

Thanksgiving has always been my family, my grandmother, and my aunt. It has never been particularly enjoyable. I do like that we have ham instead of turkey, as well as my grandmother's cranberries though. This year, some friends had a big pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving. I liked that. It was great to get to sit around and spend time with old friends.

Funny, I don't remember my familie's Thanksgivings. I like to make a large turkey, around 20 lbs, and all of the trimmings and have friends over whenever they can come by. The food is all out buffet style and they can help themselves. I watch the Macy's parade and usually a football game too. I usually marinade the turkey in a brine all night before cooking it. I don't know what this T-day will be like since I am up in the mountains.

Today I did something for Thanksgiving that I've never done before. (And yes, I know it's not actually Thanksgiving yet.)

Some Bible study friends and I organized a free Thanksgiving meal for local people who are experiencing financial hardships. We served up turkey, dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, and dessert (pumpkin pie or brownies) to about 40 people, and then some of the guys took the leftovers (about 30 plates) to the local public housing and gave them away there.

Of course, we did more than just feed the people. We tried to witness to them through our conversations with them as we were fixing their plates, and every person got a tract to take home and read. It was also our prayer that our attitudes and interactions with each other would be Christ-like, and be a witness to the people even if we couldn't get them to take a tract or engage in conversation.

We would go watch

"The Running of The Turkeys". It was always quite spectacular! Dozens of people trying to get out of the way of stampeding Turkeys! I will never forget it.

Arch--I'm reminded of the episode of WKRP in Cincinnati where they dropped a lot of live turkeys from a helicopter at a shopping mall and forgot they couldn't fly.
