What's the coolest road trip or vacation you have ever taken?
As a child or adult?
What's your most memorable family vacation?
I guess I'll start:
My family never took too many vacations, but when I was about 13 my dad loaded up the truck with all five of us children (the truck had a camper top on it so the 4 boys rode in the back- which was awesome!) and we went to Big Bend Park in West Texas for a week.
When I grew up, I bought a camper of my own and took my family to the same place. They didn't like it as much as I did, sad to say.
My favorite trip was when my son and I flew to California. We rented a convertible and tooled around the Pacific Coast Highway, went to Sand Diego, LA, Malibu (shared a table with Tyra Banks at Joe's Crab shack!), he got to rent a wetsuit and go boogie boarding, we cruised Rodeo Drive, drove out into the desert to El Centro to visit my grandfather's grave, and I even got to take him to his first drive in movie. He was a little heartbroke when he discovered that Jack Rabbit Slims was make believe, but the San Diego Zoo and Leggo Land were way too cool!
The next summer I took him to Washington,DC and Phillidelphia. He was more impressed by seeing Bam Magera's hang outs in West Chestire than the White House and Independence Hall, but we still had a blast!
This year I get to take another road trip to California all the way from Arkansas. It's gonna be AWESOME!
The best trip I ever went on was last year for fall break. 13 friends and I rented a 15 passenger van and drove 1600 miles to Mount of the Holy Cross, backpacked up it to over 14,000 feet, came back down, and drove 1600 miles back home in the space of 4 days. We even had time to stop in Metropolis, Illinois to see the giant Superman statue.
I've been on a few. My home state is Indiana, where all but a couple of my family members reside. Hoosiers and Colts rule!!:applause::dancingp::bouncy:
I was married for 10 years and 5 of those my ex was in the army. We lived in Ft. Polk, Louisiana for 2 years and came home twice driving. One, I was 7 months pregnant with 2 toddlers, not fun!!!!:toomuch:
We went on a family vaca to Houston, Texas to visit friends from Indiana. That was fun. Took 2 days with a overnight at a hotel.
This is not a road trip, but the most fun was a vacation I took by myself on a train to from Chicago to Boston. LOVED IT!!! :rocknroll:
after my parents divorced, the road trips became fun :)
my dad would take me to missouri every summer to visit his family for 2 weeks and he would sing all the way up and back. He was a country n western singer before he married my mom and that's all i heard when we were on our road trips. I treasure those times....probably because I just lost him in August :(
we also went camping pretty often and along the way, my dad would teach me about everything on the side of the road. such as the type of cows that were there, the type of trees (almond, peaches etc) all kinds of National Geographic stuff, you know how dads are...he knew about EVERYTHING
One time one the way to Missouri, he bought us hershey bars with almond :) his melted cuz he didnt eat it right away..so my job was to hold it up until it hardened up again so he could eat it. I did that for 2 days, it never did...I guess he was trying to keep me busy. Ugh my daddy was always up to something...
I've been on a LOT of BAREFOOT COOL (you KNEW I would say it that way!!! Ha Ha) ROAD TRIPS over the years ... but MY VERY BAREFOOT FAVORITE ROAD TRIP (there Steve goes again with his FAVORITE word!!!) ... was the yearly road trip my family took every year in my youth out to California from Ohio and back on the famous ROUTE 66 to visit with my Dad's sister Theo and her family in Inglewood, California!!! :dancingp::dancingp::dancingp::bouncy::bouncy::bouncy::rocknroll::rocknroll::rocknroll::yay::yay::yay: ... OHHHHHHHHH!!! How I relished each and every one of these PRECIOUS ROAD TRIPS!!! :dancingp::dancingp::dancingp: again.
This was from the summer of 1957 through the summer of 1963, all but the last road trip being before I became physically-challenged from developing "young people's arthritis" ... and in the Fall of 1960 a new adventure series debuted on America's television screens titled, guess what? ... "Route 66"!!! ... and this series quickly became a favorite of my 13 year old adventurous self with its young "road warrior", helping-people-out-as-they traveled heroes "Buz Murdock" and "Tod Stiles" ... perhaps, some of you my age, enjoyed this series as a favorite too, still remembering it fondly from those years of its 4 year run of 1960 through 1964 ... anyway, it was SO BAREFOOT COOL then to me after this series came on for ME to be ACTUALLY traveling and enjoying adventures on ROUTE 66 myself for the rest of the years my family did so!!! :yay::yay::yay: WOW!!! WOW!!! Barefoot WOW!!!! my young heart felt every year doing that!!! ... and THEN some!!! :dancingp::dancingp::dancingp::bouncy::bouncy::bouncy::applause::applause::applause::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::goofball::goofball::goofball:
Steve, Your Goofball Barefoot Expression Guy!!! :goofball:
I've always wanted to travel Rt 66 from one end to the other. I was a truck driver for a brief period and traveled all over the lower 48, so I got to see most of it (what was still left).
It would be neat to travel the length of 66 and stop at all the cool road side attractions, eat in the little diners, and stay in the old mom and pop hotel. Maybe that's something Saved3 and I will get to do. It would be way too cool to do it in a convertible too.:rocknroll:
I don't know about the 'coolest', but I have had several. Driving up and down from Seattle to San Francisco and back -- I've done that a couple of times as an adult and lots as a kid.
On a business trip to Hartford, CT I left 4 days early so I could do some sight-seeing. I was alone with no one to share the experience with, but it was fun, fun, fun!! Got lost, got sore feet, I was a total tourist and hit all the spots.
I had one day to site see in New Orleans on a business trip. I took a van tour and the driver drove and pointed out all the sites while speaking 4 different languages! And on another trip I had one day to see Charleston. I went for a horse-drawn carriage tour that was a blast.
