WANTED: A PROV 31 WOMAN
Posted : 30 Mar, 2010 03:04 PM

Hi Guys

Why do so many of you want a proverbs 31 woman?

I am asking this because I am very happy not to be one.

The woman described in Prov 31, strikes me as a very succesful housewife and excellent mother whose organization talents, diplomacy, intelligence and all other wonderful gifts are only of use for a profitable life, where she contributes to her husbands reputation and also is very active in charity as well.

Excuse me for asking but where does it say that she seeks to do Gods will?

Just asking....:excited::excited::excited::excited:

Hey Sos,

I don't claim to be a biblical scholar. I am not. My understanding is that because it's in the Word, than that is His Will. Because of the amazing ability that God has given us (women) to multi-task, we can do all that and more. I was a successful housewife and mother because I learned to delegate, organize and prioritize my tasks and set reasonable goals. He doesn't say you have to do all of it in one day.

God has called me to teach, so I find myself not only doing that at church, but in my everyday life in my realm of influence. Which just means the people I run into at the grocery store and my friends and family.

Reaching the lost through whatever gifts and ministry He has given me as well as taking care of what He has given me stewardship over is what I call a good day! :applause:

The Proverbs 31 Woman :

10An excellent wife, who can find?

For her worth is far above jewels.

She is rare and precious

11The heart of her husband trusts in her,

And he will have no lack of gain.

She is trustworthy

12She does him good and not evil

All the days of her life.

She is kind

These show her Character as a Wife

13She looks for wool and flax

And works with her hands in delight.

She works joyfully

14She is like merchant ships;

She brings her food from afar.

She goes extra mile to get choicest goods

15She rises also while it is still night

And gives food to her household

And portions to her maidens.

She is disciplined

16She considers a field and buys it;

From her earnings she plants a vineyard.

She is enterprising, prudent with money

17She girds herself with strength

And makes her arms strong.

She is energetic

18She senses that her gain is good;

Her lamp does not go out at night.

She is good steward

19She stretches out her hands to the distaff,

And her hands grasp the spindle.

She is diligent

These show her Devotion as a Homemaker

20She extends her hand to the poor,

And she stretches out her hands to the needy.

She is compassionate and generous

This shows her Generosity as a Neighbor

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household,

For all her household are clothed with scarlet.

She is provident

22She makes coverings for herself;

Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

She is elegant

23Her husband is known in the gates,

When he sits among the elders of the land.

She is influential

24She makes linen garments and sells them,

And supplies belts to the tradesmen.

She is industrious

These show her Devotion as a Homemaker

25Strength and dignity are her clothing,

And she smiles at the future.

She is poised

26She opens her mouth in wisdom,

And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

She is wise

These show her Influence as a Teacher

27She looks well to the ways of her household,

And does not eat the bread of idleness.

She manages her home

28Her children rise up and bless her;

Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:

She is praiseworthy

29"Many daughters have done nobly,

But you excel them all."

She is distinguished

These show her Effectiveness as a Mother

30Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,

But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

She is God-fearing

31Give her the product of her hands,

And let her works praise her in the gates.

She is honored

These speak to her Excellence as a Person

Thanks very much for your reply: 1babygirl, dennis, steve.

I am still a bit fuzzy though

1babygirl:

the words of prov31 were spoken by Lemuel, King of Massa. Not all characters described in the bible are a good example for us. I am still wondering if Lemuels wanted profile is a good one. It sure will be a profitable one, as this woman seems to make no mistake.... everything she touches turns into gold.

I am asking the "guys" here, is that what you want her to be?

Dennis:

The qualities you state are of course very important. But still I would say those qualities make her a descent woman. But a godly woman...

Steve:

I keep wondering if Brad Pitt would have left the lovely Jennifer Aniston if he would not have believed to find all these wonderful qualities in Angelina Jolie...

In general:

Still there remains my question: where does it say that she seeks to do the will of God? Or is that perhaps not important?

This prov 31 profile looks more like a secular profile than a godly profile to me. The world is full with women as described in prov 31. Being an excellent wife and wife, having a succesful career and do a lot for others..... that does not necessarily make a person a christian of godly woman.

Once again, I am just asking. Please step forward and let me know.

WHY DO YOU WANT A PROV 31 WOMAN SO MUCH?

Oeps....

Big mistake and irritating error

I am not asking only guys. I come to realize that maybe it would be even more fun to invite also the ladies to participate. Sorry 1babygirl, I did not at all mean it the way it sounds....

Once again, I appreciated your post and please continue sharing your ideas

The error:

Last phrase, wife and wife shoud read wife and mother

Sorry for inconvenience

OEPS part II

I just received a very disturbing private message of a gentleman who was deeply concerned. If by any chance I was going to tell him, how to pick his lady...

Furthermore, the gentleman informed me that a woman should be exactly as described in Prov 31: "what else do you want her to be"...

Am I pushing the wrong buttons here????

Hey Harriett!! :waving:

I'm a little confused, so bear with me please...:glow:

It seems that the root of your issue with Proverbs 31 is that it does not specifically say, "She should do God's Will" Is that true? Or am I mistaken?

In my opinion, Proverbs 31 basically summerizes, by example, what all Christians should be; all the characteristic examples Arch gave earlier. In Proverbs, it just specifies it towards a woman.

Or, you could look at it this way.... There are MANY men on this site that say they want a Proverbs 31 woman, I'm sure you already know that, haha! The actual woman referred to in Proverbs is married, we are not (or aren't supposed to be) so, basically, the men are looking for a woman that possesses the qualities listed by Arch because there isn't a single woman out there that can honor her husband. LOL! Do you see what I'm trying to convey? If they're truly looking for a Proverbs 31 woman, they're looking for a married woman, and that's not allowed, so it's easier for them to summarize what they're looking for in a woman by using that example.

I hope I've made some sense; sometimes I have a hard time typing what I'm thinking so it does.

With love,

T

Thanks for your point. Got the message here.

Personally I am not so sure whether the proverb 31 woman is meant as an example (a godly woman).

Everytime I read it, I recognize a basic woman. Cherishing her husband, being a good mother, doing an excellent job (in and around the house), is intelligent and knows how to run her household, helps others, fears God...

To me, these are very common, basic things. Nothing special.

The proverb 31 woman seems to do these, basic things, in excellence.

Now here I start to worry. Must we, in case she should be considered to be a godly woman, be so exceedingly succesful?

In other words, do christian women have to be as succesful as is described in Prov31. Must she strive so much to perfection and excellence? I just wonder whether this woman really is a godly woman. It looks more like a description for a woman in the secular world where success, excellence, and achieving are so excessively important.

What makes this woman so godly, as there is nothing mentioned about God being the centre of her life.

Now the funny thing is, that many man state that they want a relationship in Christ and they want a woman who has God as her No 1. And next they come up with this proverb 31 ...

So thats why I am asking why men want a Proverb 31 woman. What makes people think that this woman loves first God?

I say: really? to me that's pretty special. i don't really know very many people like that. true that's basic, but by definition if it's evident somebody i know lacks in that, there really isn't any other 'special' thing that can compensate for that. i've actually never read proverbs 31, but after seeing that, who wouldn't want somebody like that?

If anything, say #1 God fearing #2 Proverbs 31 woman is just redundant because it says God fearing in there already.
