Like Ole Cattle's question, this one I don't know where to put it as it goes for anyone I suppose.

Can someone help me understand that if We exist to Glorify our God and Saviour, then why would we exist to celebrate something that glorifies evil?

I did it as a kid, but I honestly don't know if I want to raise my kids that way. And dressing up and such, it doesn't necessarily coincide with evil, but when you look at the roots of Halloween, it does.

So, can someone, help me understand modern times thoughts?

And I know this may be a bit confusing of a question, I couldn't think of another way to word it :/

So uh, happy halloween

Not :) :yay:

Spiritually...

There is a season for everything, and fall is a time to think about the thin line between our temporary lives and what happens after the fall of our lives. Daylight is disappearing, trees turning colors and dropping leaves. I don't see how embracing that facet of God's good creation could be considered evil. It is a time we must look our mortality square in the eye, it's a big picture time. Isn't that good?

Pragmaticly...

Jason vs. Freddy is a very far cry from leaving a plate of food out for grandpa, however is any congregation doing itself any favors though by stepping so far away from the popular discourse that halloween invites? If halloween isn't an examination of "where are we going?" then what is? What have you done if you turn from people asking these types of questions and leaves them with... horror movies and wal-mart superhero costumes.

Historically...

To say that halloween is not christian and is therefore evil begs some questions. My church is having a saints walk and has been for at least the last fifteen hundred years. Before then it was a pagan holiday along with mid winter and springtime, now known as Christmas and Easter. What about the fourth of July?

Scripturally...

I don't understand the scriptural problem with halloween, are any days set aside besides the day of rest?

interesting.... I have actually thought about this question recently. I don't have philosophical reasoning behind my explaination. The above poster is correct, as far as I know, "scripturally speaking" there is nothing "evil" about Halloween. It isn't like people are out really slaughtering people and doing all sorts of evil in the streets.. (tho egging houses and cars and such isnt exactly a Christian behavior)...

The way I see it Halloween does celebrate "horror" and "fear" and "trickery" and if I was rasing kids I would allow them to participate in the activities of Halloween, However, I would have them do it where I did as a child. At the Church. We got tons of candy, we had tons of games, and the adults had tons of fellowship time.. So Halloween the holiday can glorify God and bring Christians together just the same..

But I don't really think there is a "right" answer, because no where in the Bible does it stat anything about celebrating a meaningless holiday... No different than celerbrating Veterans Day or Memorial Day (the day where soilders fought and killed people in the name of a country)....

Theres my two-cents!

Yes, I can see it that way too from looking at Scripture.

Thank you all for helping clarify this for me :)

Good advice- many years ago at a church I attended a guy took his kids out for halloween and he ate the candy 1st.It was poisoned!!!!! He was very sick!!!! So,I say why celebrate?

Some churches have a fall harvest party-Good idea.

Halloween is the day devil worshopers celebrate.Have to dig that book out. Many things from halloween are satonic.

Though, it was originally a pagan holiday, Halloween was not the celebration of evil. Costumes and such where worn to scare off "evil" spirits. Everything else is dark age propaganda.

Halloween was the celebration of the change of the seasons. From the long summer months to the short winter.

You don't go around saying a Leprechaun is evil, do you? They are a pagan myth also.

Besides, I love Halloween. When I was a kid, my church would hold safe Halloween kids parties, no devil or witch costumes allowed, but you still saw plenty of skeletons, mummies, monsters, etc.

I just don't see it as evil.

In England, some people refuse to associate with our national flag, because it gets so prominently used by racists in their propoganda. It's now often seen that to have a Union Jack outside your house is to declare some bigoted neo-nazi intention.

Where something is neutral, with a background that's either irrelevant to the current situation, or at least ambiguous, it can be hijacked by anyone with an agenda - spiritually or otherwise.

We as Christians can either turn our backs on Halloween, pretend it's not happening and bury our heads in the sand until it's over, or we can use it to engage the world.

When I was a kid, I used to cringe for the whole evening, as my Dad (a Pastor) would answer the door to trick-or-treaters, and give them a lecture on the evils of Halloween - and these were my school mates! These days, if my church isn't holding an event, I keep the sweets (candy to you Americans) by the door, and happily give them out to the kids who come knocking - along with a flier for our kids club (where we can spend the following year evangelising to them properly)

If you take the Christian input out of Halloween, then there's only one spiritual influence left for those running around in costumes.

I won't abandon my flag to racists, and I won't abandon ANY day of the year to the Occult. In either case, if the bad guys want it, they can fight me for it!

I wish I had said that; the way you did so brilliantly. There just seems to be such an opportunity to engage folks in a conversation instead of browbeating dark themes with dogma. Especially in the too frequent case that our philosophy is indefensibly medieval.
