Do you study the Bible?
Posted : 28 Jan, 2014 08:32 AM

Today I just received a phone call from one of the fellows here. From our conversation, I just knew that he has been studying the Bible for 7 years. I suddenly feel embarrassed because all my life, I never really study the bible seriously. Yes, I read the bible and go to the church every week, but I am not that religious. This makes me feel sad and embarrassed because I will be 27 years old this year and find myself from being religious :'(

Please don't judge me because of this. I just want to know how often do you guys read the Bible? Do you read it every week? every day? or even a couple times in a day? Do you study the bible? If yes, where and what makes you feel urged to study it?

Last question: if you guys are interested in a girl, but she is not that religious, will you lose interest in her? Will you continue talking with her or not? Why?

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to this post. I hope you have a nice day wherever you are.

God bless you :)

Hi; I read my Bible every morning and also many times in the evening before I go to bed! Also will study different subjects in the bible! Would I date a girl who doesn't read her bible every day? No I wouldn't because the bible is my road map to heaven so if she doesn't have a desire to read her bible every day I would question the sincerity of her Christian walk! It is hard sometimes to have a desire to read because of the pressures of life but I find if I pray and ask God for a desire for His word before I sit down to read it helps me stay focused! Study to show yourself approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth!

I don't read mine daily, but I have read it through several times. How often you read is no substitute for how well you know it, and I don't just mean memorizing verses - though that is useful - but do you 'see' God when you read it? I see God's love in the old testament just as much as in the new, and whilst the new has far less "immediate" punishment for sin, it's no more lax on it than the old - makes me laugh when atheists try to use the OT to denigrate our faith and reminds me of what Jesus said: "are you not in error because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God?" Y'see? I may not know the literal chapter and verse of that quote but I know what it says.

Would I date someone who didn't read the bible everyday? Of course! The scribes and pharisees pored over scripture daily yet still missed what it was all about. What I want to see in a date is that they've met the risen Lord and His love shines in them; to quote again, "better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king".

Your question and the way you opened your heart for all to see says much about you. I sat here and was amazed at the honesty you shared and the fears you expressed. Religion is a terrible trap to fall into and a very difficult trap to get out of.

The Bible, the very Word of God, is a demonstration of God's divine purpose, His plan for the redemption of fallen man and a love letter written to your heart. Read that again...it is a love letter to YOU. Every sentence, every verse speaks in different ways to different people and everyone gains a different understanding when they read the letters of God to His people...You do not have to read God's love letter every moment of every day to hear of His plan for man, for you. The most important thing for me to say to you is that the Father of Lights, Jesus Christ came to this earth to tell you of His great love for you...He loves you so much that he gave up His life, His glory in heaven, His place beside the Father just for you to know that you are His love.

I would love to write you a love letter and tell you how wonderful you are, as a man to a woman...but the Bible Is not just a love letter to you as a woman ...it is a love letter to you as the highest order of creation...it is a love letter to you as an immortal soul ...

Well that is my opinion.

@dkj255: Thank you for your kind reply. I appreciate your opinion. Your words really comfort me and I am encouraged to read and study the bible more seriously. I can't guarantee that I will be angelic or very religious, but I am trying. I pray that God gives me the heart to listen and understand more of what He says in the Bible. I honestly envy people who are blessed to understand God's words and hidden wisdom in the scripture..

Anyway, thank you for the response. I wish you find the right woman you have been asking God for :)

@dunravin: thank you for your kind reply. I really appreciate it. What you said is amazing. I actually never saw the Bible as God's love letter to me until you told me so.. It is very beautiful.. How come I never thought that way? Thank you for writing the response so I can read it now :)

I see that every one has a different understanding when reading the Bible.. I am just worried that I might read it the wrong way and not fully understand it.. I want to study more about the Bible, I want to know God more.. All I want is to understand what is the purpose of my life here and let the Bible guide me to walk the right path. I need to ask God to give me a strong will to always read the Bible and open my heart and mind to understand what it really means. I will spare my time to look for kind people who can guide me in Bible study.

Thank you very much for your response. I am really glad that you took the time to write a response. I wish you find the right woman you have been asking God for :)

I do not study or read my Bible everyday, but I do think about scripture all the time. God brings to mind certain scriptures throughout my day, depending on what I'm doing or going through at that moment. Yes, I've read it through before. No, I don't have it completely memorized. I wish I did. But what's important is that we hide the Word in our hearts so that we don't sin against Him. That we know the meaning and understand what God's perfect truth is (or at least seek to know it). We're all at different levels of knowledge and wisdom. Would I date someone who didn't read or know the Bible that well? Yes, and I have. I lead both of my first wive's to the Lord. It was an honor and a privilege that God granted to me. I would love to lead more to the Lord, but that's in His hands to guide me to someone, or someone to me. But if He leads me to a woman that is already saved, but maybe doesn't know the scriptures as well, then I would be happy to teach her. I'm sure there is teaching I could learn from her as well. Even if she only knew a little, maybe it's something I haven't learned yet. Or maybe we could find a new understanding together. Either way, I'd be happy to find any woman in search of God's face as I am. God bless you all.

I read it almost every day for several years then put it down mostly for several years. Now I've been reading it almost daily again for the past year or so and I find it amazing all over again.

Being religious just means you do thing habitually or repeatedly. You could drink coffee religiously. I think it's more important to be spiritual and just plain love God. Also, it's great to have a strong faith and the Bible helps with all those things.

One thing I've gotten into that I kind of shunned for awhile is my Bible on the tablet. I actually like it reading to me while I read along and it helps keep me focused and somehow having a computer generated voice read to me takes out the bias and I hear/read things with new perspective.

Also, I'd encourage you to start with an easy to read Bible like NIV, ESV or even NLT. And, perhaps read the Gospels and Daniel and Acts and.. I'm just saying there pretty amazing.

I think the biggest thing for me is I get questions answered and peace from reading. I've gone through phases where I do more praying but most of my Christian life I get more from reading. Anyway, I think your inquiry is great and I hope this is encouraging for you. The first time I read the gospels I wept and I am kind of exited for you that you get to experience the Bible for the first time.

I've been a christian for over 20 years and until recently never read the bible daily. I'm not religious, Christianity is a way of life.

I've grown in faith a lot over the past year and became motivated to read the bible everyday when our pastor had a sermon in our church about how the sum of the churches spirituality is made up of the total of each Christians spirituality which grows through prayer and studying the word.

As we grow spiritually we can better reach out to the unsaved and strengthen the church and its ability to help those in the world.

I want to reach out to the unsaved in the world and edify those in the church around me. I can honestly say that my input within the church has been increasing as all parts of the bible have relevance in so many situations and show Gods character.

I sometimes only read a chapter a day, if I get right into it I might read 10. I stopped reading the king james version as it is harder work and I get more from the NEV. I use the online bible on fusion 101 website usually. I missed Leviticus out as it is too much of a grind for me and I don't want to lose my motivation.

Hope this helps.
