To be EQUALLY YOKED?!

Now I know that to be unequally yoked means a believer with a non believer. With that being said....can it also mean that a new believer and a spiritually mature believer are unequally yoked? How about age, attractiveness, etc? Just want to see what others think.

Thanks! :)

I think the importance behind being equally yoked is that you influence each other. If you're yoked with a non-believer, they might eventually come to the faith, but just as likely, you could be removed from yours.

As for someone strong in the faith being with someone of a newer or weaker faith . . . It would be unequal yoking, but not in as dangerous a way (sometimes). Is the person falling away? Stagnant? Actively yearning for more?

un

(cf. O.S. ant-, O.N. and-, Du. ont-, O.H.G. ant-, Ger. ant-, Goth. and- "against"), from PIE *anti "facing opposite, near, in front of, before"

equal

late 14c., from L. aequalis "uniform, identical, equal," from aequus "level, even, just," of unknown origin. Parallel formation egal (from O.Fr. egal) was in use late 14c.-17c.

yoke

O.E. geoc "yoke," earlier geoht "pair of draft animals," from P.Gmc. *yukam (cf. O.S. juk, O.N. ok, Dan. aag, M.Du. joc, Du. juk, O.H.G. joh, Ger. joch, Goth. juk "yoke"), from PIE *jugom "joining" (see jugular). Figurative sense of "heavy burden, oppression, servitude"

was in O.E. The verb is from O.E. geocian.

There was a similar topic discussed a little while back. Im gonna copy and paste a response that I found very insightful and very simple. It was written by, AsmileForever:

Spiritual Equality?

They key is in the words. Yoked. A yoke is a device farmers use to join a pair of animal together for the means of pulling together. WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW is that a yoke must be custom made to fit the animal. You just cannot use a yoke on any pair of animals. So if you and your partner are yolked it will fit perfectly no matter the titles we put on worship.

Don't you just love the details in the Bible. :)

""WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW is that a yoke must be custom made to fit the animal"

Would it not be that the animals would be trying to pull in different directions and therefore unable to accomplish the task?

The yoke is custom made so as to fit properlynot too snugnor too loose. It has to fit any peculiarities unique to the wearer.

That being said the animals also need to be similar in sizestrengthstamina or one will eventually pull the load off-line.

In my opinion Jesus was not referring to sizestrength or stamina but more to the fact that the two being Yoked Together need to be on the same page when it comes to Christianity. A Non-Believers Goals are obviously not the same as a Believer.

Even two Believers may not be Equally Yoked if they do not have the same Beliefs or Goals. One could be a so-solukewarm professor of Faithand the other an OnFire Spirit-Filled Fanatical Christian. This Unequal Yoking will eventually cause a rift between them as one of them finds themselves falling behind and being Dragged by the other.

It is Rare to find two Christians that are Equally Yokedyet if they are so far apart as I just describedit needs to be discussed before any thought about Marriage and Children is discussed.

When it comes to being Equally Yokedthe only Criteria should be their Faith (or lack of). Physical appearance or characteristics or anything else should not be considered.

Think of it this way. The two of you are pulling a load. That Load may be your Eternal Soulthe Future of your ChildrenFamily and Friends, Your Salvation! Wouldnt you want your Partner to be One that was pulling just as hard as you do and not One that was Dragging you downholding you back? That is what Jesus was alluding to. Pick your Partner CAREFULLY!

Peace Be With You
