China wants its people to use all things Chinese... so they have blocked facebook, YouTube, and Twitter and created their own Chinese versions to be used within China. More than 90% of my students have never heard of facebook, but if I say it is just like renren (the chinese version and it looks almost exactly like an older version of facebook!) they know what I'm talking about. And they have also blocked many blogs, though I don't know the reason for this. My internet connection is fairly limited, but there are ways around it (though they don't always work very well). Posted : 17 Jan, 2011 02:45 PM I do have to be careful about what I say, the Chinese government can read my emails, blogs, or whatever else I send through the internet and kick me out of the country for whatever reason. I can't start a Bible Study in my home, but I can answer questions when I am asked (and I have had more students asking questions than before!). I was told by one other English teacher that it isn't a big deal being a Christian in China - that persecution doesn't happen anymore - but I think he was a little ignorant. Students have invited me to their "secret groups", but it would not be a wise decision for me to go to one of them. Post Reply
