So forgive the long winded texan, He is at it again:

Today, I made a blunder, when I clicked the Live Chat button.

When I entered the chatroom, what looked like a fight between a guy (name withheld) and a woman(same deal)

She set a very high bar that eliminated a huge percentange of the human male group. And she presented herself in a way that looked no different then a religious legalist.

And the guy started responding to her by listing aspects (what seemed to be from her profile) of who he wouldn't date. She took great offense and said he was insulting her.

Later the guy said lets move on, and apologized. She never acknowledged the apology.

But one thing she said, I had to comment on. She said she would never date a guy with tattoos, and I asked why... She never answered, and someone said that the bible says we shouldn't have tattoos.

To that person, I asked:

"where does the bible specifically state that no one should ever have tattoos other then Leviticus 19:28?"

(which in light of Acts Chapter 15, specifically 15:29, says what part of the mosaic law that US gentiles who follow Jesus are required to keep, exempting us from the Law of Leviticus 19:28)

They never gave a biblical answer. Now yes, we are the temple of the holy spirit, and yes, light has no fellowship with darkness.

But what about having scripture tattoo'd or where it says that God has carved the names of his people on his palms? Can the practice of tattooing be used to the glory of God with thanksgiving?

Also, the other point I raised in live chat was: What if the tattoos a person has are from their prechistian life? Is there no grace for them, but a shunning and excluding from ones list.

Where is the grace in that? If God has forgiven him or her, shouldn't he or she get a second amongst God's people?

Yes, I agree standards are good, and profitable.. but up to a certain point.. then they become a form of rejecting people shortsightedly at the cost of one's own potential gain.

Where do you fellow men stand on Tattoos and other past prechristian choices, with regard to future spouses and is there grace for the future mate?

Ladies... same question.

Good grief, I don't even need to go to Leviticus, cause the flesh counts for nothing, even if it did; God's Grace doesn't cover tattoos? :ROFL:

Here is the real question : Would you ask Jesus to go the the tattoo parlor to help pick out a tattoo? Hmmm...you think Jesus and you could get matching tattoos?

Forget the Leviticus verse, here is the New Testament verse you ought to look at : 1Peter 3:3 " Your beauty should not come from outward adornment ......"

The principle applies.

I have heard the whole gamut of reactions from Christians on tattoos. My personal feeling/conviction is that the Leviticus verse does not apply to getting tattoos today. If a Christian wants to get a tattoo, I think moderation should be exercised and above all else lots of prayer. Will it cause someone to stumble?

My own personal feeling/conviction is that God gives us some freedom on how we adorn/decorate ourselves. Always keeping in mind moderation, taste, and whether it will cause someone to stumble (by that I mean someone in your family/friends/co-workers who knows you are a Christian. We obviously cant account for stumbling blocks of every single person we might meet)

I have three tattoos, all of which I got after I became a Christian. They are not large, and all have personal meaning to me. I always bring it up early on when getting to know someone. Yes, I have had some men stop talking to me after I told them. Doesn't bother me. I don't advocate or encourage any Christian from getting a tattoo. I have told many that it is their own choice -- but first they should spend lots of time in prayer about it.

Just my opinions folks.

another post said that what is important is our hearts and I agree 100% -

tattoos wont keep us from heaven but if you have strong onvictions against them, then follow them.

i personally dont have any, not that I dont want one but I just never did it.

I also belive it should be done in moderation, anything in excess is not good for us...

I have one that I got before I knew the Lord. I wouldn't get another one (just me). I wonder what it will look like when I get my glorified body? Will it even be there?

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the Jesus has a tattoo/Leviticus is talking about pagan rituals camp. Do I have any tattoos? No. Do I plan on getting any? No. But I've dated girls who had them. It's not something I find attractive, but it's not the end of the world either.

@twosparrows...

Outstanding verse.. and in context, and on point.

Its just a little bit stronger than 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:

"Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body,"

@Godslamb

I am with you on the stumbling blocks. I buy a lot of Black permanent ink sharpie pens (not so permanent), because I write my two key bible verses on my palms either daily or every other day.

Its to keep them before my eyes, so I am constantly thinking or being reminded of them.

I use sharpie pens, because they are as close to a tattoo as I can get without opening my flesh and spilling any of my blood. Or having to pay 1000s for laser tattoo removal.

A friend told me they now have tattoo inks that are disappearing ink, after 6 months they are gone.

@Chevy

"I have one that I got before I knew the Lord. I wouldn't get another one (just me). I wonder what it will look like when I get my glorified body? Will it even be there?"

I looked at the bible on this subject for about a week. There are some hints.

I suspect that we will retain scars, just like Jesus retained his scars, and at the time of his crucificion he was beaten until he was unrecognizable.

After he was raised, a number of people who happened into him, that knew him, didn't recognize him either. That is, until he performed actions and did stuff that gave him away.

Dear doubting Thomas, put his hand's into the wounds of our Lord Jesus.

It is said "He is the firstfruits of many". I suspect our resurrections will be no different than his own.

Then we have was Jesus said, Its better to enter eternal life maimed (cut off a hand that causes you to sin, or pluck out an eye that causes..) then to go to hell with a perfectly good body.

He might not be speaking strictly in metaphor here, after all, He would be able to repair any losses, that people made to ensure their repentance.

I'ts great to use the Bible to answer this question. But I think that this question can also be answered without the help of the Bible. It has always been a historical fact to use body marking such as tattoos and piercings and cutting to mark a persons slaves. To me Tattoing reminds me of the old ways of things. The Bible also states that we should keep our body pure and clean inside and outside. But even without using the Bible as a reference we should be able to recognize that Tattoing is a similiar practice to slavery. Slave owners often put rings in noses and ears of their slaves and or prostitutes. This marked their ownership. I have also learned that even today children that are sold into sex slavery are marked with a tattoo that allows the owner to know who they have purchased or have owned. It may not be a fact that a person with a tattoo is or has ever been involved in this type of slavery but I wouldn't want to have the association with it. To me there is just too much that can be implied or read into the meaning of a tattoo. Even though there may be no real reason for the tattoo. It still comes down to the fact that what I like today I may not like tomorrow. Then I have to face the fact that I want to remove it later and deal with the consequences. We don't always need to refer to the Bible to answer common sense questions. I think that if you looked at all the pros and cons of getting a tattoo without referring to the Bible one would still find that the cons out weight the Pro's.
