Have you ever been "slain in the spirit," fainted when the Pastor lays hands on you in a prayer line (usually)?

I know for a fact some ppl fake it, because they admit it. They say they felt like they "had to pass out" because all the other ppl around them did.

Of course, I believe others have experienced this for real.

So, my question to everyone who has been slain in the spirit, how was it? Explain your experiences please. This topic always intrigues me.

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful responses!:glow:

dkj, I know just what you mean. I have an acquaintance who is pentecostal and has never spoken in tongues. She has doubted her salvation for as long as I've known her (8 years) because of that. Some of her friends have even told her that if she were really saved, she would be speaking in tongues. She goes to special services where they pray over people in an attempt to get them to speak in tongues (or exhibit other "gifts"), and so far it hasn't worked. This girl is pretty much a mess because of that, and no matter how many times I try to show her in the Bible that speaking in tongues is NOT the end-all sign of salvation, she doesn't believe me.

Tell her to find another church because that one isn't building her relationship with Christ, it's wrecking it.

Good luck though - easier said than done!

"I remember when they came up to me, they said a few lines and tried pushing me backwards. I didn't go. They tried again and again to push me back but everything in my spirit was telling me this was wrong and I refused to fall back. They gave up and moved on to the next person...I believe that if God wanted me over, He'd have done it without needing people pushing me."

lol...yeah, I hate it when that happens! Hilarious.

"...It seems to be quite common amongst pentecostal churches and Christians in my experience. I was even told that if I can't speak in tongues (I have only once) then I couldn't have the Spirit in me - and the implication may even have been that I wasn't really saved."

dkj255, I know you directed this @bcpianogal, but I just wanted to say....

That's sad that ppl try to make others question their salvation just because they don't speak in tongues.

I was saved for the longest and didn't even know the deal with tongues, etc. The Spirit resided in me and the ability to speak in tongues, as well.

But I needed to be baptized in the Holy Spirit first, which is different from just having the Holy Spirit come to live on the inside of you, which of course happens at the moment we accept salvation.

And then, MY personal experience was, when I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, I still had to accept/confess with my mouth that I wanted to speak in tongues. Only then was I able to speak fluently.

Plus, if you spoke in tongues once, you already can speak in tongues, so their assumptions seem to be just plain twisted!

Anyway, thanks for your response.

bcpianogal, maybe you could tell her to ask for tongues in her prayer closet, the privacy of her own home. (Only if she WANTS to speak in tongues though).

I had people pray over me like twice and try to "make" me speak in tongues, and of course, it didn't work because people can't "make" me do anything. It's a gift from God, not people. I felt forced.

However, when I got alone with the Lord, relaxed my mind, and accepted the gift verbally, the Holy Spirit moved on me in a way that He never had before. I spoke, laughed and sung in tongues for 2 hours! Couldn't believe it!

I think it's a matter of asking for it when you're ready, and when it's time it'll happen. Forcing it doesn't feel good at all. :prayingf:

This girl that I know does want to speak in tongues, and doesn't care if it's in public or only in private prayer. I've suggested that she find a different circle of friends, or a different church, or that she just search the Bible and pray for God's leading in the matter. But she seems to be so caught up in what "everyone else is doing" that she can't have any peace about it. It's sad. There are so many other things that God has given her that she could/should focus on, yet she doesn't even see those as important because she is "missing" this one thing. **sigh**

bcpianogal, I know that's a tough one. It always makes it harder when we compare ourselves to others, but I guess it's so easy to do.

It's a booklet I read on the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues. I can't remember if it was written by Kenneth Hagin or somebody else, but it taught me a lot concerning the matter. IF I can find it again, I'll let you know the name of it. It may help your friend.
