Thinking about ego and selflessness:

How can you be humble and self-sacrificing, but also maintain your self esteem/respect? How do you gain self esteem/respect without sacrificing humility?

Interested to see what others have to say on the subject. :goofball:

Ok, Ill be serious,

How can you be humble and self-sacrificing, but also maintain your self-esteem/respect? = How did the apostle Paul do this? From the worlds point of view he didnt. From our fleshs point of view, he didnt either and neither will we. From Gods point of view he did.

How do you gain self esteem/respect without sacrificing humility?= True self-esteem/ respect comes only from Christ like humility.

By keeping our eyes on Christ in a worldly world and trusting Him.

The only source of true self-esteem/ respect is Gods approval, since God is the only One capable of approving His own image which we are created in. And, true self-esteem/ respect can only occur as we are emptied of ourselves (our old nature/ flesh is crucified) since it was never us in us that was respectable it is no longer I Paul, but Christ living in me. It is only Christ living His life through us that is respectable.

Our flesh is crucified when we like Christ humble ourselves daily before God, lay down our lives, and take up our crosses.

Seek first the Kingdom of God (which comes inwardly as we seek) and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you as well. Including your sense of self worth and respect, and being valued and respected by others. We cannot save our own lives. Instead we are to give back to God what belongs to Him, so that He can take them up again.

Before God created Eve, where would Adams sense of self-esteem have come from? And if Adam would have kept God as the source of his approval and self-esteem it is likely that Eve would not have been misled so easily.

Where did Christs sense of self-esteem and respect come from? Like Adam in the beginning, Christs approval and self-esteem came from the Father. But unlike Adam, He did not shift His focus. Personally, and this is just my opinion, I believe that Adam would have been a lot more respectable if he had not sought his approval, self-esteem and respect from elsewhere resulting in strife, old age, sickness and death entering the world.

Consider Moses. God said that he was the meekest man on the face of the earth. Yet he was able to approach Pharaoh again and again in clothing that was not fashionable. He led a people out of Egypt that constantly grumbled against him and wanted to stone him to death - while he laid down his life for them on a daily basis = humble, self-sacrificing, prozac free, respected by quite a few (including God Himself), all in all, a pretty serious Dude. His approval and self-esteem/ respect flowed from the Lord as did Davids, Daniels and the Apostle Pauls.

I believe there is self esteem and self respect to be gained in the very act of being humble and/or self sacrifice. For me I feel great when I help those in need or do something that can never be repaid. Just doing some yard work or helping with repairs and not telling anyone you did it is being humble and self sacrificing at the same time! It doesnt have to be specifically these things but im sure you catch my drift. I dont do things because Ill get something out of it mind you, Its just the next right thing for the next right reason!

Self esteem is not Biblical.
