I am going to post this in both the gals and guys section.

Joel Osteen

I am wondering what people think of his sermons/or him? Do some people believe he sugarcoats subjects?

I don't know what most people think about him.

I do a pretty good Joel Osteen impression. My dad thinks its funny. Osteen is a great speaker (even though I find him annoying). He has accomplished a lot of things for his church. He turned it into a mega-church. You don't do that by having mediocre skills.

Now that I've started by saying something positive, I'll start my criticisms. He doesn't emphasize that Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life". He also doesn't lay out God's commandments for righteousness. I haven't watched much of him because he drives me nuts, but I'm not sure he emphasizes a relationship with God. I'm not sure that he reads from the Bible either. What I mean by "not sure" is that I don't think he does but I can't say for sure because I haven't seen enough of him.

Second criticism: He preaches prosperity messages. If you hang on to God he will bless you and you will prosper. Yes, there are verses along these lines, but what Osteen means is financial prosperity.

Third criticism: He is ambiguous in his preaching. Other than, "focus on God and your day will be great" sort of teaching, his sermons don't have much of a point.

Fourth criticism: He is always positive. This is a good thing until your message is always positive. He doesn't lay out what is right and wrong. But the Bible does! Osteen kind of leaves that part out.

Fifth criticism: His wife was thrown off of an airplane. I don't mean sky-diving, I mean that she was removed by airline staff because she was out of control. Not okay for that to happen. I can overlook that. What I can't overlook is the fact that there was no real explanation and definitely no official apology.

He kind of reminds me of "The Prayer of Jabez".

2 Timothy 4

1In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encouragewith great patience and careful instruction. 3For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Why does it matter? I just don't understand why people choose to be so criticle of Evangilists, Preachers, Teachers, Pastors, etc. etc. etc. on T.V. If just one" person hears the message of Salvation in any form...then I'd say "Praise GOD" for the seed has been planted and thats a Good thing. I watched Joel for years and received much "Word" through his ministry. I'd much rather Praise God for Joel than to Damm Joel for God...We are all one in Christ. Let us act accordingly, with Love and in the Spirit....xo

Dear GodsJude,

I would love to be able to tell people that Osteen is promoting the Kingdom of Heaven rather than just sell books. From what I've seen he doesn't stoop to Benny Hinn's level but I haven't heard him carrying out the Great Commission either (Matthew 28:18-20). Could you possibly set me straight with some youtube links, audio files, or quotes from his books in regards to what he is doing to promote the Gospel?

I think its great if you like Osteen for being a positive influence. But until I hear him publicly announce that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, I have to say that he is a lousy pastor.

Dear Eric, I know that Joel is a very positive person. In a previous post I stated I (watched) him for years and that (was) a very long time ago. I do not watch TV nor do I view youtube links, listen to audio files or have read any of his books. So I am unable to set you straight as to these venues. You have the right to your opinion and perspective as we all dothe whole thread here has gone from a discussion and views to tearing apart a person. Where is the love in that ? There isnt any that I can see here. So you all go ahead and crucify him and I will turn away and drop the stone in my hand.

Dear GodsJude,

You are right. This discussion, prompted largely by me, has gone to tearing him apart. So without attacking his character or asking for specific sources, let me ask a broader question that is open to interpretation.

What has/is Joel Osteen doing for Christianity in America?
