What do you men think about "GOING SOLAR"?

Wouldn't it be great to lower our heating and cooling bills by going solar?

I'd sure welcome a small energy bill.

What are your ideas for going green and going solar?

WalkNTalk, I like the concept of going solar. But what if there's a long period of limited sunlight? What if there is a shortage of the materials needed to make solar panels?

Finally, we lack insights so far on what the long term implications of massive use of solar power would be. Is it possible that massive conversion of the sun's energy into solar power would negatively affect the temperature on Earth? I don't know.

I do think solar power is better than nuclear power (Nuclear waste is a problem.), hydroelectic power (droughts and lack of water are problems), wind power (wind isn't consistent and wind turbines kill birds). I also dislike the earthquakes that come from fracking for oil and natural gas and the pollution of coal.

Some interesting points, James.

Handyman also speaks of nuclear.

Now there is an idea of mini-nuclear plants as being safer and easier to deal with. We do not want to repeat Chernobyl nor do we want to repeat the disaster at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant following a massive earthquake and a massive tsunami.

Wind turbines are also buried and bad for landfills.

Hydoelectric plants displace fish populations such as the samon population and cause earthquakes.

Solar panels and batteries have a toxic contribution to the environment.

I think we should return to the Garden of Eden.

There is also passive designs. Passive Solar, one can heat water using a milk jug. One can use glass sheets to make a solar box and heat air or water using sunlight and not so harmfully heat a house using sunlight, as well as light with natural light provided by the sun.

One does not need to poison the earth in going solar.

There are some simple things we can do that are kind to the earth and save us money.

Thank you for sharing. Hope you share more.

Nice reading your thoughts, James. You make good points.

Nuclear is a lot better all the way around then people have been led to believe. Solar when combined with high efficiency building practices makes for a good combination. Less energy required to heat and cool means less requirement for a large solar and battery back up system, but also works anytime energy is needed. A big problem with building energy efficient homes is the industry and government inflates the cost of building green so much that it prices many out of the market so government despite claiming to care about the environment cares more about passing useless regulations rather than just making it easier to build green. That same useless mindset makes retrofitting homes difficult due to over regulation and helping to again make it expensive.

But then you also have environmentalist who have a lot of impractical ideas they're pushing people to implement when what we need is for people and industries to come up with practical solutions that are not only doable but also affordable that typical tradesmen can build.

Lawyers and government need to keep their noses out by putting the responsibility for doing stupid things back on the person that did it . So if an idiot consumer ignores the warnings not to touch his solar panel wiring and he/she does it anyway and dies then he's 100% at fault so nobody gets sued for it. That right there would take out much of the over pricing of many things.

Interesting points, Handyman!

You say, "government despite claiming to care about the environment cares more about passing useless regulations rather than just making it easier to build green."

I believe you, Handyman.

The government more hinders going green than it is helping us toward going green.

I believe going green will only be supplemented by industry. That the practice of going green needs to revert to the people, and government needs to allow it.

Over-regulation may favor industry or money interests, but it does not favor a world going green. But a nuclear power plant should be well regulated.

WalkNTalk, thanks for your kind words and for your additional insights.

Reducing unnecessary energy use may be the best solution of all. If most of us slept at night, when it's dark, and used natural sunlight more during the day, the savings on artificial lighting would be significant.

Eliminating unnecessary use of automobiles would help too.

If we lived in small houses or apartments, it would cost less to heat and cool them.

Handymany62, you make nice points about impractical environmentalists, and government and industry making problems.

However, I'm still skeptical about the safety of nuclear power.

JamesEG we may need more nuclear power because there's not enough power generation using all other methods combined. We are now just barely supporting our current usage. There's not enough solar, wind or even gas generating capacity to continue to cover the growth we have been experiencing and with P.D.J.T. bringing back industry we will need a lot more power generation. Gas generating could do it but a lot more polluting than Nuclear power.

Solar and wind can't take up the slack and have become a cause of the slack because rather than utility companies investing in regular power generation they invested in solar and wind because due to government subsidies they made the same or more money with technology that produced less energy which also benefited their regular power generation by shorting the market of surplus power thereby allowing them to charge more for less power.

I believe magnetic repulsion is the solution.

Good ideas, James!

Yes, I'd like to maximize on sunlight

and small houses are easier to heat.

I definitely want to reduce those energy bills.
