I am considering getting a tattoo of scripture and would like to know your (men) point of view on the matter. Not for approval but my own FYI.

I am looking for someone who doesn't have tattoo(s). But again, I think, it's personal preference. I don't think it's a good idea to put permanent marks on our bodies unless it's some place where it's invisible most of the time.

* The Bible doesn't say that we should mark ourselves with Scripture. It does say that we should carry it on our foreheads but NOT TATTOO it on our foreheads. There's a difference! If God wanted His people to tattoo His words on their skin, then He would have told them to do it. The Bible does not command us to tattoo anything on ourselves ANYWHERE. In fact it tells us not to cut ourselves...

* Your taste may change over time, yet the tattoo remains there.

* Also, what if you ever get into a position of authority where people look up to you and you're supposed to serve as an example for others? If you have a clearly visible tattoo on your arm or neck, then people will see that and think that this is all right. What if the pastor will pick someone else instead of you, because you have a tattoo which makes you unfit for this type of work? You don't see what the future holds for you, but I cannot imagine one positive thing that could come out of wearing a tattoo.

If you want to advertise Christianity, then you could wear a t-shirt that has some Scripture on it. You don't have to tattoo it on your skin!

Finally, what makes us a Christian is not visible. It's not a heavy gold cross which is hanging in our neck or a big "John 3:16" tattoo on our arms. Those things don't make you a Christian. Anybody can have those things. What makes us a Christian is invisible. It's in our hearts. His name is Jesus. And you can't put Jesus in your heart by putting a tattoo on your arm or chest or any place. It's superficial. God is looking at our hearts. So, we don't become better or worse by wearing a tattoo. So, then, the question is why do it? Why get a tattoo? If it doesn't make us better or worse, then what's the point? It is not like makeup, because you can wash off makeup very easily. It's not like fake eyelashes or hair extension or nice clothes, because you can change those easily. You can easily put on a different set of clothes. But you can never change the tattoo. I don't think it's a wise thing to get a tattoo of any kind. :-)

Tattoos bear a connotation of rebellion and "grunge". Though that connotation does not fit every individual, I think tattoos on women largely appeal to the men who want a "dirty girl", not a Christian lady.

Thank you for your opinion, that's exactly what I was looking for, an opinion. I should let you know though that I would not do it to replace any aspect of my Christianity nor do I think that I need to advertise across my forehead, I was actually thinking on my back. IF I were to do it, it would be solely an expression of my faith, a way of "shouting from the mountaintops" my love for the Lord. I have many christian shirts, it would just be another way for the world to see the word of God that may not otherwise. If a pastor or anyone else judges one on their tats then I don't want to go to that church anyway.:stop: I went to a biker church that truly knows how to show the love of Jesus to ALL, after all - it's not our place to judge but God's and God's alone. It's our duty to love one another.

Not only do I have an extensive background in the workforce but I also have a degree in Business Management so I fully understand your point when it comes to employment, I invite you to do a little reading on Rosetta spacecraft scientist Matt Taylor. Tattoos having nothing to do with a person's IQ or abilities, on or off the job.

Tattoos definitely are a preference and yes, they are permanent, which is why I don't have one as of yet. I have been considering a tattoo for a long time and here I am 40 and still no tattoo so it'll probably never happen, who knows. As I age you would have to iron out the wrinkles to even read it!

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

I don't like ink in skin personally. It's a turnoff to me even if it is scripture. Remember your guy will have to see that for the rest of his life too after you get married.

In addition to the bible not telling us to mark ourselves with scripture, it specifically says not to get tattoos in Exudous. Of course that's around the same place it says guys should never shave their beards so take that as you will. Besides we have been released from adherence to those laws by the fulfillment of the law in Jesus. Although, if I wanted to I could always grow out my beard. It would be a lot harder to make a tattoo disappear.

I often advise my friends who are considering a tattoo or another one to try doing it in henna first to see how they really like it. Since henna isn't permanent you could give it a trial run that way, without the commitment. Kind of like going on a few dates before you marry if you will.

Ignoring the condemnation of it in Deuteronomy, for me tattoo's are basically permanent bad skin-graffiti that only gets ugly with age... basically it's horrid defacement of a otherwise beautiful surface.

This has been an interesting thread...I am a 57 year old woman. In my teens I had my boyfriends name tattoed on my ankle. About 1/2" size. We later married. And much later unfortunatly divorced. Years went by and I had the lil 1/2" Tat covered with a lavender rose. I asked the artist if he could do the stem to circle around my ankle. He informed me since this my 1st "real tattoe"..."colors" and all...that it is permenant...he wanted me to be sure it was really what I wanted. I truely appreciated his concern and professionalism. Yes!!!...It is what I wanted...

This happened long before being called by the LORD Jesus and being Born Again. Its been many years and it still looks beautiful and I've never received a bad or critical comment from any gent I know or have met...

I'm not at all a raunchy dirty gal and I have concidered a Scripture my self. Just not sure which one....yet......there are many I love...

I met a young gal in her 20's at the Art shop and she had Yahweh Forever none in Lucida Script on her forarm mid point betwix wrist and crease of elbow...It is stunning and it is a Beautiful Conversation Piece!!!...

"To each their own"... x <>< o

That is an awesome idea, thank you! I may just try the henna first as a trail run. I really doubt I will ever actually get a tattoo, primarily because I do have pretty flawless skin and I like it that way. I can always resort to the henna "tats" when I get the urge!
