What's with the wink?
Posted : 25 Feb, 2012 06:12 AM

Hi, guys! I'm kinda new here, so I'd appreciate a little help as I'm not sure about the social etiquette around here...

What do guys expect from sending a wink? I mean, am I supposed to wink back? I'm not really sure if I should, or even if I want to. Sometimes I just send a thank you message.

Would it be rude if I don't do anything?

Thanks in advance for the help. God bless! :glow:

Yes, it would be rude not to respond. If you don't like the guy's profile then just send the automated "no thanks" message. If you do then he's already let you know he's interested so go for it!

I think it's a way to avoid the potentially awkward first contact with someone who has no interest. They wink to show interest. If you wink back, they write. Kind of a way of taking initiative without having to actually do anything . . . Awkward or not, if a guy wants to meet you bad enough, I think he should write *something* instead. Be brave men!

When a woman winks, I think it's different. A lot of women have been told not to be "aggressive" or "take charge". For those women, a wink allows them to express some level of interest without being too forward.

As for disrespect in not responding... In most cases, a thanks or no thanks is good. Although, I can think of a few cases where I've been winked someone who clearly didn't read my profile, blatantly lied on their own, or didn't even bother to fill it in. In those cases, I try to be respectful and send a no thanks, but exceptions have been made.

thanks, guys! i really appreciate all the help.

john444, i agree with you. guys should be braver, especially Christian ones. after all, our boldness comes from Jesus Christ. your comments made me re-think my "no winking at guys" policy. (so i'm sending you a wink--my first!--as a thank you) :glow:

personally,i still prefer a private message--shows more depth and sincerity.

I don't think it would be rude to not send a reply, just because it doesn't take that much effort to send a wink as opposed to sending a message. One solution could be to wink back if you were interested.

i'm also confused on what to do when somebody sent a wink. it's not a problem when he is not looking for marriage or long term relationship but if he is and it's evident in his profile that we are not a good match, it's a dilemma. it might be rude just to ignore him but sending a wink or a message would mean i'm interested.

dove_serpent, my sentiments exactly. sometimes i don't know if a guy is really serious in pursuing a relationship, or he just liked my photo... i guess if the guy's really interested, he would've sent a private message instead. well, at least, that's the way i would do it (if i were a guy, that is) :glow:

If he just liked your photo he'd save it to his computer and you'd never know - unless he asked you to send him some more! A wink is a sign of interest; it's up to you whether you ignore it or not.

So creepy, ugh.

It's not rude to ignore it or ignore anything. You aren't obligated to reply to anyone. Especially a fake communication like a wink.

lol actually I was this close to say "Creepy, but true" yesterday.

Remember, once you put something out on the internet you can't take it back.
