All right guys, maybe you can educate me a little on car repair.

What exactly is the transmission, what does it do, and why is it so costly to repair?

I have a 2002 Kia Spectra and the mechanic something is wrong with the transmission and it will cost quite a it to get it repaired.

Thanks for the info.

Would it be easier/better to just get a new one as opposed to getting the transmission repaired?

hi. ok here goes the transmission goes between the engine and the axle basically put. It takes the power from the engine and, thru a series of gears transfers that power to the tires. They cost so much to fix because they are fairly complicated inside and takes some time/parts to rebuild. The important thing to keep in mind on a rebuild is that you verify somehow that it is a reputable mechanic because there are a lot of moving parts inside. How much did you say it would be to rebuild? Compare that with the new transmission install cost would be my suggestion. Also would recommend a second opinion to verify thats truly the prob. Hope that helps.

also IHeartdogs, consider the miles on the present car,as sometimes it is just better to get a new one than deal with ALL the nickel and diming that comes with aging cars???

how did you get that price? The only only one I found that seemed reputable to me was a little over 1800 with a 1 year warranty, plus shipping.

My car has approximately 131000 miles on it. I was hoping to keep it for another 4 years.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I can see that it is expensive because there are numerous parts in place. I would also assume that it may be difficult to get to, thus labor would also make the price be high.

The guy in charge is my mom's mechanic, so we trust the guy fairly well. My family has known his family for years.

The options are

go with the mechanic and this other laborer that we don't know (he specializes in transmissions repair/rebuilding).

buy a replacement transmission and have the mechanic put it on the car.

buy a replacement car

Will be praying to see how the Lord wishes me to proceed.

PRO's if something goes wrong? He is easy access for repairs...

CON's if nothing goes wrong,You paid alot...

buy a replacement transmission and have the mechanic put it on the car.

Gather all available info take it and Talk to the mechanic

If you trust your mechanic, ask him what he thinks is best seeing how you want to keep it for four more years.

My guess would be to have him put a rebuild in figuring your car should most likely make it to 200,000 miles. He can determine if the rest of the car will make it for four more years without killing you financially.
