Let's talk about boredom. What is boredom to you? What's the cause and the cure?

when i feel bored, i say thank you until God helps me realize what's what. right now i'm praying to get over the pitfall of entitlement. when i'm bored it set my eyes on Jesus and pray for acceptance of his love and mercy, forgiveness, kindness, comfort and i recall what i was promised and what was not... actually by saying thank you repeatedly it becomes clearer what i have in front of me, where i am currently, and that tomorrow isn't promised. then i go and do something productive  ....mmmhhmmm, GOD IS good!! can i get an AMEN!?

mm that's good. long answer short my answer was going to go along the lines of newness as well. i think boredom sets in when you get into the trap of thinking the people and experiences aren't new and you emotionally withdraw and become disengaged, when the reality is everybody is different and every experience is different the only thing that is the same is you. i like your cure for that. it's like letting God re-new your mind.

One of my college professors said "Boredom is the result of a flawed character." I get bored when I spend too much time on one thing and I usually have to move to something different. I also get bored when I don't want to do something I have to get done like a homework assignment or lesson planning and I just have to force myself to do it.

Katiekatie, thats SO recognizable. :p

The cure? Lie to yourself. "Homework is fun. Homework is fun!" And give yourself a reward when you're done. (Food or something)

Well, I guess I'll motivate myself to get back to work... Have to make a big essay that should have been finished yesterday.

It seems like the cause is usually "no motivation" or "depression"...possibly low self-esteem or even just laziness. The cure? A nap!!:zzzz::laugh: Nothing cures boredom better than doing nothing.

'no motivation and depression'

yeah i kinda think so too which is why i started this. you see people get weary, and i guess i'd describe it as buried emotions and things become passive aggressive then you bury that and so on till it just turns into full blown boredom where no one says or thinks anything real. it has a really creepy almost visible way of spreading and becomes 'just the way it is around here' when it doesn't really have to be and people go crazy and get cabin fever, etc. in my situation, where it's hurry up and wait, and they get angry at you if you take naps, it's almost inevitable and like trying to hold back the tide. and i'm sure that can happen in any situation at some point, which is why i think relying on God to re-new your mind and nyanda's answer: praying, was such a good idea.
