What do you think is the importance of memorizing bible verses?

Word for word? It makes you look smart I guess. The really important thing is that you remember the principles dealt with: if you can't recall the text of the parable of the wheat and the weeds then remember the message that there IS going to be a day of reckoning. If you don't remember the name of the church Jesus described as being "lukewarm" in revelations, at least take heed of the warning that half-hearted Christianity simply won't do, etc.

Random bible verses or all bible verses? For me, that's not going to be easy (I have a real bad memory sometimes), but when ever I see a bible verse somewhere I look it up and write down what the verse says. I'll get the basics of what it says, but I probably won't be able to memorize it unless I hear it over and over. Thats how I memorized John 3:16 and Philippians 4:13

I agree with you, it is very important to memorize some random bible verses and i will tell you why; Has anyone ever come to seek advice from you especially because you are a believer and they trust that you will explain whatever they need to understand clearly? oh i have been there! i could not do much because i did not have the 'facts' at that moment yet i was 'claiming' to be having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Fine, God loves people...or God is merciful...or whatever...but can you back that up with what is written in the bible?

OK. far from that...you need to memorize the verses word perfect so that you are sure you are saying the right thing. what i mean here is that it is very possible to add just one more word to a verse and the whole meaning gets distorted! for example if you were quoting John 1:1 when you say that;"in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was 'a' God...This statement alone changes the whole meaning just because you added one vowel 'a'!

Lastly, memorizing bible verses is very important for 'spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:17-the word of God is our sword(the sword of the spirit) as Christians. when the devil attacks, we know how to get him! an example of this was when Satan tempted Jesus in Mathew 4, Jesus was able to resist the temptation because he knew the scripture and so we are not different, we need the word of God in our memory so that we can be equipped and ready for such times of temptation.

stay blessed!

To throw a fresh ingredient into an old stew (and maybe what simplyme_jaz had in mind);

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Which is a great memory verse too, by the way :-)
