HELP!

Okay, so I was just elected youth director at my church. I'm really excited about it and I have about a million ideas running through my head. I'm a little nervous because I'll also be serving on the church board so I don't want to let anyone down (but that's not what I need help with, prayers would be awesome though!)

Anyway, I now oversee Sunday School, Children's Chruch, the nursery on Sunday mornings, Wednesday Night Youth Group and I'm hoping to start a teen/young adult group on Friday night or Saturday night. So my question is, what sort of things have you seen in your own churches that have worked/haven't worked, mostly for the teen/young adult group. It just seems so much harder to get them interested. I know I still pretty much fall in that age range but we've never had a super successful youth group at my church so I'm kind of at a loss for what to do. I went because I never passed up an opportunity to go to church but it's not that easy for everyone else. So any advice I can get would be more than appreciated :)

One cool thing the youth group I went to in high school did was have "Breakfast at the Pointers'." Which was simply breakfast at the Pointers' house every Wednesday they'd set up tables in their cramped living room and dining room and we'd have a prayer and read a devotional and then just eat breakfast and fellowship before school started. It was surprisingly really successful. I don't know if you could pull it off or not, but that's one idea that was pretty cool and worked.

At my church the Focus Class as we call it is for single people between 18 and 30 or so. This class is aimed at guiding Young Adults from being in school, and there for usually served, to find where they fit into the church to serve. I liked the class and it helped me to figure out where my skills and gifts fit into the body. It also covers some of the fundamentals of the Christan faith and how to share it.

Adding teens into this group could be difficult and I think that a Highschool class works better. However if you wanted to do a mentoring program where Young Adults came and could be paired with teen, that could be really helpful, especially if they shared certain skills or life experiences.

I'm glad that you are able to have this opportunity, and you seem to be very passionate about it. I would warn you not to dive in to it all and try to start too many groups at the same time. See what's already in place, and try to add maybe one or two at a time. It looks like you have a lot on your plate. See if you can find a few trusted individuals to assist, one in each area, so that you are not having to coordinate everything about each group!

Good luck, and God Bless!

Thanks for the suggestions! Yeah, I'm already working on getting other people involved, especially on Wednesday nights because I'm away at school during the week (which would make the breakfast thing hard to pull off unless someone else took charge of that). I was planning on splitting up the different groups on Friday/Saturday nights and then just having everyone come together in the end for like a fellowship sort of thing.

We already have a pretty strong Sunday School and Children's Church so I'm really just looking for volunteers to teach it so the same person doesn't have to miss services every Sunday morning. I've already had so many people tell me they would be willing to do whatever I needed them to do so I'm definitely blessed to be part of such a great church.

I've never seen or heard of this being done, but have been wondering for a while if karaoke would go well at something like that.

i knowat my church they do paintballing. i went once and had a blast. they also did tubing down the river.

and i think a tea brunch would be cool but im into teas.

the one thing you could always do is ask the group things they would apreciate doing.

I know a great way to get new students to come to youth group. Hang out with the kids outside of youth. Go have lunch with them at school. Go to footbal games and other things at their schools. Other students will ask who you are and your youth group will introduce you to new kids and you will get to personally invite them. Also if you eat lunch with them once a month kids will see you there on a regular basis and ask for prayer or ask questions about God. It is a great way to be Jesus to them.
