I was wondering what kind of instruments people played. Most everyone I know either plays piano or guitar, but what about all the other wonderful ways out there to make a joyful sound?

I don't play anything yet, but I'm looking into getting a wooden flute and teaching myself if I can't find a mentor. I love the look and sound of the Native American flutes and I've been praying about finding a way to participate more in worship groups and to take my own personal worship time to another level.

So how about you? What do you play or what are you trying to/wanting to learn to play?

how cool. I too love the sound of old fashioned wood panflute. You will have to let us know how it goes for ya.

I would love to be able to play a musical instrument but at this time I do not have the time or money... maybe later I can attempt something.

So, as of right now the only musical instrument I've got is my voice lol... but I do love the sound of a harp as well as the panflute and also percussion chimes.

I'm primarily a pianist (classically trained, BA and MM in Piano, teach private lessons, and I am a full-time college professor). However, I also play the flute and piccolo, organ, and harpsichord. I have a violin, but I'm not very good at that. At one time I also played around with the clarinet and saxophone...but never could play more than a few notes.

I just play the guitar, but I'm not very good. I bought some drumsticks in hopes of learning to play the drums, but it hasn't happened yet... all I can do is play a drum roll badly. I took a 6 week piano class in 6th grade, but I don't remember any of the songs I learned.

I play the cello - started when I was about 20. I take lessons (half an hour every other week) and I would like to play in an orchestra some time but I'm not very good about practicing. But my church is very small and informal so I play along with the worship there and that's what I really like doing. And I suppose I'm biased, but I think cello music is about the most beautiful there is. :)

"Play" is such a strong word...

I 'abuse' a guitar and I'm beginning to 'abuse' a piano too! I play mostly by ear, though I do have rudimentary music-reading ability - can usually carry a tune on a piano if it's something I know but I'm not endangering anyone's livelihood with my, ahem, skills!

I know most of the basic chords on a guitar but find that some songs I can't sing and play at the same time because of the rhythym causing me difficulty.

All-in-all, I'm just not very good musically!!!

Play by ear. That reminds me of a story. When I was in high school we had a Vietnam veteran come and speak. He had a phosphorous grenade go off in his hand right next to his head. He ended up losing his right ear and had the bones in three of his fingers fuzzed. After he healed up, he learned to play the piano, even with the fuzzed fingers. Anyways, one time a guy asked him for the millionth time how he could play the piano, and he quipped, I play by ear, and he took off his prosthetic ear and started to play the piano with it.

Thanks for sharing, guys! "By ear"? Oh dear...

I got my flute today! It's a Native American style flute in 'G'! While I'm only playing with the scales so far, I can tell this is really going to be a good fit for me. I do believe I'm hooked! :glow:

I don't play any instruments, but i enjoy listening to shamisen, piano, drums, violin & a few others if it'll make the particular song come alive. If i had to learn one it would be violin. Anyway congrats on getting the flute Arawen :).

Technically, the voice is a musical instrument and the only one in the world that can be unpredictable.

I sing :glow:
