Good Person Speech

Are you a good person? Many times people tell you how good they are. They say things like, "I am a good person," "I am a nice guy," "People tell me I am a good woman." No matter what they do they are good. We tell children that they are good no matter what they do. I wonder how good we truly are. Are we all good. There have been many times when someone would tell me that I am a good man. I try to act and do good, but that does not make me good. Other words used to describe good, of good constitution or nature, useful, salutary, good, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy, excellent, distinguished, upright, and honorable (strong;'s Concordance).
What does it mean to be good? In human terms it is to do good deeds for others. Such as, helping someone with a problem or giving money to to a needy person. We need to do good for all in all we do. However, some people would tell you all the good they do, even if it is one good thing from two years ago. Our action speak louder than our words. Just because, we tell people we are good does not make us good. Romans 3:23 says, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." How can we be good if we have fallen from the glory of God? Sometimes I think some people throw around the word "good" without thinking. We all are born with sin in our hearts, and no matter how good we act it does not bring salvation. Many times people claim that they are good enough to get into heaven based on all of the good things they claim or have done for all. Thus, making them good.
How can we measure goodness? This is a picture a measuring stick or scares. With a measuring stick you measur the length of an object, and scales measure weight of an object. We measure goodness by the actions of people, and we weigh them by good deeds. How can good deeds make you a good person? In Mark it says,
" As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone." (Mark 10:17-18, NASB95). The man called Jesus "good teacher,"but Jesus asked the man why he call Him good. Then points out that only God. Here is the Son of God telling a man who is showing respect to Him by calling Him good, then the man hears that there is One who is good, and it is God alone. Jesus is both God and man.The man who knelt before Jesus must have seen all of the good deeds that Christ has done when He healed the blind and the lane walk. The man also heard His teachings on salvation. Then wondered how he could receive eternal life. Maybe the guy was thinking that he had to be a good person to be saved. God's grace comes to those who will receive it by grace not by good actions. How many of us have seen people that claimed to be Christians, but did not come across as a good person? Sometimes we throw our goodness around and forget the One who makes us good.
We ought to seek to be good as Christ is, but we should remember that God alone is good.No matter what we do, we can never be better than God.
