Why is it that if you tell anyone else on campus that you don't drink or party, they look at you like a freak of nature? Anyone else have that problem?
Hold tight to your convictions! If it is wrong for you to drink, and you go ahead and do it then it is sin for you, and you have violated your conscience. Other people may not have the same personal convictions as you, in regards to drinking socially, but each person is accountable to God for their decisions. Partying brings about ungodliness and immoral behavior that can lead into more ungodliness (i.e. sex, drunkeness, orgies, etc) and is act an direct disobedience (Gal 5:21). The apostle Paul does speaks much about this to the Romans and to the Corinthian Church, and his exegesis is as follows:
In short, "those who want to live by the law, wil be judged by the law. Those who are in Christ have been set free from the law and dont live according to the law, but by the Spirit who gives freedom." The apostle Paul says in Romans 14:1, As for the one who is weak in the faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. (a more accurate translation of greek here is "dont dispute over disputable things" because of the verb tense of Opinions), which means that there are things that are not disputable like the direct commandments(i.e. drunkeness, wild parties, etc). There is Christian liberty that we have as believers because we are Not justified by the law, but only by Faith alone. Paul's exegesis here is that we have freedom in Christ and we are free to do what we want to do, given that it is not an act of disobedience to God's direct commands. What else would freedom or liberty be than to be able to do what we want to do! The only way that it would be wrong for someone would be because of Personal convictions for himself/herself. For the Scriptures say, if you believe something is wrong and go ahead and do it then it is sin. A person the quarrel or fight over these opinions(tattoos, piercings, etc) is weak in the faith because they have failed to understand what it means to be in Christ and how we are justified!!
As I ay and believe, I will not take part in such activities that invoke ungodliness and more ungodliness, and choose to stay away from even the appearance of temptation. Hold tight to your convictions and live up to the righteousness that God desires. You, as well as myself, are responsible and accountable for my own actions, and I dont want to choose any decision that violates my convictions and conscience, and thus grieve the Holy Spirit. Be encouraged and remain faithful!!
Satan provides many temptations for immoral behaviors. Parties are just the start. As a Christian, we must "flee from sin/Satan." Being a part of this world means engaging in worldly desires or fleshly desires that make God sad or Satan happy. Jesus said His kingdom was no part of this world, and we should be imitators of Jesus Christ; hence our name as Christians. Read the books of Proverbs and Matthew for a summary of what worldly behaviors are and how to stay clear of them.
2. Be different
The disciples did not behave like everyone else. People knew they were different, not just because of their preaching, but by other behaviors: kind words, random acts of kindness, agape love, respect, restraint from sinful behavior, restaint from circumstances where sin may be present... Being different today is the same. Many people behave in a way that glorifies Satan, they lie, steal, cheat, get drunk, have sex, watch or engage in violence, etc. Christians are to be CHRIST-LIKE. We are to glorify God and His ways and Bible principles We are to be "ambassadors of God" in ALL that we say, do, and think.
3. Lead by Example
It is not ok to say, "I am a Christain" and then behave in manners that contradict the Scripture. Doing that give God a bad reputation. Remember, be no part of this world, and Be different. Don't just talk about God and Jesus, show people by your behavior (by not partying, cheating, being angry, etc).
4. Be a witness, verbally, and through behaviors
It does not matter what other people are doing, what matters is what you do and how you handle other people's behaviors. (loving kindness, respect, a helping hand, councel, agape love, etc) I use scenarios such as the invitations to parties or immoral activites to talk about God's way. This way, I can explain to people, in a nonjudgmental way, why I am declining the invatation. I tell people, "I make a conscious decision to try to live according to God's Instructions, and that means that I try to stay away from things I think may make God sad, or may make Satan happy." This often opens the door for a deeper discussion about God. However, I can only do this if I am relatively succeasful in the first 3. I cannot decline an offer to get drunk, and give a testimony to God because I am "not being part of this world, being different, and leading by example" if I then show anger, am inpatient, am mean or rude, or engage in sex, violence, anything relating to the occult, etc. Again, "ambassador of and for God."
