What are you taking next quarter/semester?

Lets see... I have 9 credit hours this coming winter quarter which is 3 classes...

I have:

1. Clinical Abstraction

2. Statistics and Trends in Healthcare

3. General Psychology (ugh I have to take this again since Sinclair won't accept my credits from Rhoads)

and I'm NOT looking forward to this coming fall's transition to semesters! I do not see how adding 4 weeks to the course period but then require a person to take 3 to 4 more classes to graduate on time equals out! Common sense tells you IT DOESNT! *wimper* how on earth am I going to keep track of 5 classes a semester and now be considered part time instead of full time??!? I've a hard enough time keeping up with 3 classes... and 4 additional weeks isn't going to help... only hurt since I usually get burn out by the 7th of the 9 weeks currently... now I'll have burn out in week 7 but still have 5 weeks to go instead of 2.

Oh... any of you out there who are use to semesters? Any advice for keeping on top of the extra classes and extra work?

keep in mind I also work full time and only have 3 hours a day to devote to homework (which works out nice when you only have 3 classes... 5 classes not so much).

I do currently use OneNote in my schooling... 1 divider for each quarter, 1 subdivider for each class, 1 further subdivider for each week of each class, and then individual pages within the weekly divider for each assignment, chapter notes, pdf notes, study guide, as well as my weekly assignment list that I use as a check off sheet.

Kaynine: wow last 6 credits! woohoo! Congratulations! I bet this last quarter of yours will flash right by and you will soon find yourself with degree in hand. Enjoy!

I still have 1 year and 2 quarters... but due to the transition to semesters I fear it will be 2 more years total instead of a year and a half

I'm under the quarter system, Paschen. My 3 classes are 5 credits each; 15 credits total. Last quarter I did 13 credits. 180 credits minimum are needed for a Bachelor's degree. I'm not sure how semesters work. I've heard people say that it's more relaxing because, even though you're taking more classes per session, the classes move at a slower pace. I must admit that the 10-week quarter (+ 1 week for exams) seems a bit like a crash course. But, I get that burn-out thing too between weeks 7 and 9... going on for another 5-7 weeks beyond that sounds like torture. Maybe it's just what you're used to, though. I was at the University of Washington previously and they were under the quarter system, as well. They considered switching to semesters for awhile, but the students protested so much that they decided not to!!

I've done both quarter and semester systems. I liked things about both. The quarter system allowed for taking fewer classes at a time, and if I had a class I really hated, I only had to tolerate it for a short time. The semester system allows more time for really learning the material (since you don't have to rush through it), and the tests/projects/paper/etc. are not usually as close together. That evens out the fact that you take more classes...more classes, but less work between each class period. The classes also tend to meet for less time each week.

I don't think that you'll have a hard time adjusting. 12 hours (usually 4 classes) is considered full-time at most schools (esp. for undergraduate work...9 is full-time for a lot of grad programs). To me, the work load didn't seem much different; there were just more classes to keep up with. I was also a music major, so I had a whole bunch of little 1-hour classes, about three or four 3-hour classes each semester, and I typically had anywhere from 17-18 hours total each semester. That should have made it even more tricky to go from quarters to semester, but it really just wasn't that hard.

I think you'll be fine!

thats cool Pixy... I wonder how your school figures credit hours. Like where I am if you have a 3 credit hour class you have 3 hours of lecture and aproximately 6 hours of homework a week.

HIM is 108 credit hours for an Associate degree then an additional 90 for the Bachelor's. You MUST sit for the RHIT (associate) credential and pass before you can be accepted into the RHIA program (bachelors) and then you must have a minimum of a 3.2 GPA from the RHIT program.

I'm currently at a 3.5 GPA but dropped to that from a 3.68 when I got 2 B's this past quarter :(

I hope this quarter isn't so difficult so that I can keep that GPA up.

Once I transfer to get my RHIA the coursework is broke down into 5 week periods and you take one course every 5 weeks and focus only on that one course. The RHIA takes 2 1/4 years to complete AFTER the 2 1/2 years it takes to complete the RHIT.

Guess we'll see how it goes... I may wait to continue to my bachelors until after I've relocated somewhere warmer and am back on my feet a bit better before diving into that feat... but then again while I'm at it I might just go ahead and get it all finished in one leap then be done with it. Well except for the continuing education which I already have to do with my CCS certification. I'll just have to have 40 CEUs instead of 20 when I get my RHIT and am dual credentialled.

happy joy! lol.

Thanks for the advice on the transition to semesters. I just hope I get all of my classwork in before the transition and only have my clinicals to do after the switch.

Chemistry 101 (General Chemistry -- it's the first level)

English 103 Honors (Critical Thinking)

Math 105 Honors (College-level Algebra)

On a thrilling note, I think I received all A's this semester (18 units-- crazy, I know)! :bouncy:

Woohoo wisdom 2 honors courses? Wow I barely have enough time to do normal coursework to even attempt an honors course even though I'm eligible to take them.

College algebra generally isn't difficult just time consuming once you get into complex operations with multiple polynials and you use one whole piece of paper to solve one problem. Hopefully there isn't a's much homework assigned for you as there was for me 200+ question a week for just homework I think is excessive

Good luck with your courses everyone :)

Paschen, at both of the schools I've been to, the credits equal the number of hours you'll be in class each week. The exception to that would be lab classes! The biochem. class I took at the University of Washington had 4 hours of lecture per week and then a 3 hour long lab. It was 5 credits. Another chemistry class I took had 5 hours of lecture and a 3 hour lab, as well -- also for 5 credits.

As far as the homework/studying goes... At the school I'm at now, you'd double the credit hours (so 5 credits would = 10 hours of homework per week). At the University of Washington, they said to multiply by 3, but I found that multiplying by 4 was more accurate if you wanted a 4.0 (so 5 credits would = 15-20 hours of homework per week). Taking a full load at the UW would basically involve sitting in class for 15 hours a week and then spending an additional 45-60 hours on homework/studying/papers per week. And, yes, that was for freshman-level classes!

This coming quarter, all of my classes are online, so we'll see how that goes time-wise!

I'm taking Finance Management and US Military History for my first 8 weeks. My second 8 weeks are likely Labor relations and my final Economics credit which I'm sure will be pain.

I'm a Management major BTW.
