Why is it that if you tell anyone else on campus that you don't drink or party, they look at you like a freak of nature? Anyone else have that problem?

Pick new friends :) When I was in college, I got plugged in immediately to a campus ministry where I met some awesome Christian people who were doing the same thing - refusing to participate in the typical "partying" scene. However, we had our own "parties." We had way more fun sober than anyone could have had not sober. We did some pretty wild things, but kept it legal. Drinking is so overrated.

Rodey, I currently attend a Catholic campus. I must unfortunately say that mostly everybody here is a partier, just like any other campus. I am the same way as you. I detest partying and drinking... it's simply very difficult to find people who aren't huge into the whole partying and drinking thing.

Your best bet might actually be to find a larger university. A larger university will offer more diversity. More diversity means that there are more people who don't drink. You just have to join clubs and such to find these people.

I have to agree with you guys that say it depends on the school. I go to a very small, private, Christian-affiliated school. We have a "dry" campus, but that doesn't really mean anything of course. A lot of partying goes on.

However, I've been lucky enough to have found a lot of wonderful friends and some great groups of people who really respect my decisions. And I haven't had much trouble with anyone else. Most people here pretty much accept you any way you come. That's why I love it here!

Just one thought on the whole drinking thing:

What was Christ's first miracle? Yep...you got it...it involved alcohol. He turned water into wine...not fruit juice...wine. While I disagree with the abuse of alcohol consumption or if used in a situation where it may cause a "brother" to stumble, I don't understand why some Christians turn it into a much bigger deal than it is. There's nothing wrong with having an alcoholic beverage every now and again...I'm not saying get drunk, but only every now and then...I'm simply stating that I don't believe we who enjoy a beer or two on certain occasions are any less of a good Christian than those who refuse it entirely.

Khapuk,

I completely agree with you. I have no problem with drinking at all, but I'm underage, as are many of the people on my campus. Aside from that, I'm simply not a drinker for my own reasons. I think what these guys are trying to get across is not that they have a problem with drinking as a whole, but that they feel like some people have a problem with their choice not to do so. See what I mean?

I have experience this also my school is a big party school. I have also had people that drink and party that also respect and praise me for myself control.

I also don't believe drinking alcohol in moderation is not a sin. However, some people get addicted to alcohol easier that others. For this reason I have decided not to drink at all because I don't want to any chances.

I believe khapuk77

hit it on the head. As long as you don't cause a brother to stumble; and don't get drunk. As for Bible times when speaking of wine; it is not the same as the wine we have today. Here is a pretty good article.

Hmmmmm, this is an interesting topic to say the least. Using Christ's miracle of turning water into wine as a justification, or at the least propping up the idea that a Christian's goodness or lack thereof is somehow connected to alcohol consumption; is walking on thin ice at best. Although, going to the Scriptures for insight is the absolute best first step and is to be applauded.
