Beards. Jesus had one. Why don't you?

Why the hate? If Jesus were here would you tell Him to shave?

Bible says to walk as He walked. He had a beard, so I do too. He was a carpenter, so am I. I just want to follow in the footsteps of the Master.

Why then did He give us beards? If not to have them?

Imken84 wrote that he is "required" to shave. As in, he is not allowed to grow a beard. But none of you are answering what I plainly asked, so I will rephrase it.

Why then did God give men beards? What is the purpose of beards? Why are people so intolerant of beards, to the point that shaving is a requirement?

In other words, nobody called you a sinner for having a beard?

How do we know Jesus had a beard? I don't recall any mention of it in Scripture...

Shaving is hassle enough with Gillette and Wilkinson Sword razers that we have now. Back then it was probably a professional job for a skilled barber with a cut throat.

The disciples weren't overly flush with deniro so shaving would have been a waste of resources. They probably didn't have haircuts either for the same reason.

My whiskers get itchy if I don't shave for a few days so that's reason enough to shave as we are given free will.

I did want to be a Chippy but I don't like sawdust so that put an end to that.

Wouldn't have be very good as far as plumbing and electrics go if we were all carpenters.

Do you wear sandals by any chance?

"That beards are treated as a sin in modern society."

...WHERE? WHERE IS THIS BEARD PERSECUTION GOING ON? IT MUST BE STOPPED.

Last time I checked, there were an awful lot of men going around with beards. Those beards range from a few scraggly hairs, to goatees, to full-blown beards, and everything else in between. I haven't exactly heard or seen them being persecuted for having beards. In what ways have YOU been persecuted?

And, for the record, the guy that I'm dating has a beard of sorts...well, more like a goatee. It's quite nice looking.

OP:

Im not saying that all men in Japan shave, no. Some men do have beards of sorts. But there's a business etiquette here that views unshaven facial hair as unprofessional and untidy - NOT sinful!

But this is especially true for office workers and not for outdoors men like me. Its more relaxed where I work but in order to not offend my boss, as an unshaven face can be interpreted as not being serious, I choose to shave.

As far as my understanding of the Word goes, having a beard is not a sin as well as shaving it off.

God bless,

Ken

Wow. Rude comments. Yes I wear sandals. I also understand that we all do not have to wear sandals or be a carpenter. But I don't see anyone getting insulted because they are a carpenter, or for wearing sandals. The Old Testament requires Israelites not to shave their head or beard. (Lev. 19:27). So Jesus did have a beard, otherwise He would have broken the law. I have been persecuted because many jobs require employees to shave. I did not say that having a beard is a sin in modern society, I said that beards are treated AS a sin in modern society. AS is the key word here. If I worked at Terminix, for example, and decided to grow a beard I would be fired. If I had a beard and applied for the job, I would not be hired. In addition, every single one of you has not answered what I asked. Instead, you ignored my question and gave me rude remarks. I will ask again. Why did God give men beards? To me, beards just seem natural. Shaving seems unnatural to me. Why would He give us something that we shouldn't have?

>I also understand that we all do not have to wear sandals or be a carpenter<

So then you admit your interpretation of "walk as he walked" is not an accurate one?

>But I don't see anyone getting insulted because they are a carpenter, or for wearing sandals.<

Nor have you succeeded in showing you are being insulted because you have a beard.

>I have been persecuted because many jobs require employees to shave.<

If that's the worst persecution you've faced then you have lots to be thankful for :)

> I did not say that having a beard is a sin in modern society, I said that beards are treated AS a sin in modern society.<

And you have failed to show this as well. Sorry but certain jobs requiring an individual to shave... does not help your theory that having a beard is treated as a sin in society.

>AS is the key word here.<

TREATED is pretty key as well

>If I worked at Terminix, for example, and decided to grow a beard I would be fired.<

Which shows a beard won't work for that company. It doesn't show that it's treated as a sin. BTW, open this link to see a Terminix employee with a beard...http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Qn8-Axxq6dk/TABjHB_UqbI/AAAAAAAACIs/Ro2BOXXZlWw/Ben's%20last%20day%20at%20Terminix_0001%5B4%5D.jpg

>Why did God give men beards?<

Because He is sovereign.

>To me, beards just seem natural. Shaving seems unnatural to me.<

Then showering is not natural...If we are simply to leave EVERYTHING as is, in order to remain natural, then we shouldn't shower either.

>Why would He give us something that we shouldn't have?<

But of course that's not the question is it...because no one has said you shouldn't have a beard.

Furthermore the word used is peripateo. It means to walk around. Meaning we are to lve a lifestyle like Christ. We are to walk around doing as He did. That does not mean everyone become a carpenter or grow a beard. It means a life if grace....etc.
