Posted : 21 Sep, 2010 07:23 PM Recently a company called AquaBounty hit world news by petitioning the FDA to approve their genetically altered version of Salmon for human consumption. If approved by the FDA the new salmon could be feeding America in 2 years. Supporters say the new Salmon is very similar to the original Salmon however they are modified to grow at least twice as fast. They also point out that having more salmon will help fight potential food shortages that have been projected with the growth of the US. Critics are not nearly as optimistic about the salmon's potential. They project that the new salmon could cause increased food allergies in humans. Another concern is that handlers (some located abroad) may accidentally let the fish escape into the wild were they would compete with and potentially wipe out the wild salmon population. This concern comes on the heels of the FDA's struggle to police the recent egg salmonella outbreak. These are only a few of the main points for each side. Posted : 22 Sep, 2010 05:47 PM I agree with tulip that said however, I couldn't literally eat it everyday or anything like that... but I would certainly eat more of it than I do... there are many ways to cook salmon that are all delicious (at least to me). I do not feel we should genetically alter animals. The only time I feel that plants can be genetically altered is through natural cross pollination that results in a cross-breed plant however, if the two plants are not compatible in the pollination process then leave it alone no cell splicing please.
