Premarital sex

Hello friends, i need our help here; I had and argument with a friend, i was telling him that sex before marriage is wrong and it is sexual immorality itself but he insisted that Paul in the bible talks about sexual immorality but never at one point has he identified sex before marriage as sexual immorality. According to my friend, sexual immorality has more to do with incest, homosexuality, extramarital sex/unfaithfulness....he also said that their church allows premarital as long as it is done in love and with one person...

what do you say about all of this. is premarital sex right or wrong?(please back up your view with the bible teaching)

stay blessed!

I'm curious as to why he's focusing only on Paul.

I don't think Paul mentions it that I can think of (I could be very wrong), but I'm not sure what point that proves. If you take the Bible as a list of specific instructions, then, sure, maybe. But I don't think it is. I think that's treating it really cheaply. And why Paul? How odd.

hmmm i was always taught it was wrong to have sex before marraige growing up and I've come to agree with that. it is suppose to be a joining of two souls and you would want to do such event with someone who tied themselves to you for life. if you do it before things happen and relationships ends and you regret what you did. but for the most part i think many people have different views and each must make their own choice.

From what I've come to understand and accept: to have sexual relations with someone you are not joined to by God, i.e. marriage, is the same as sleeping around with someone else's potential wife. Besides, if you truly love the person then you would honor them by asking their hand in marriage. Premarital sex has nothing to do with love and everything to do with lust! If we say that we believe in Christ then we ought to practice the law of Christ,

>NIV

He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

Obviously, if we don't know how to love ourselves then we will go about offending others. That is why we need His Holy Spirit to teach us the law of love and to write it down in our hearts.

BTW, it's quite disturbing to hear of a church that tolerates premarital sex among it's members! :(

Blessings from Japan,

Ken

Learn from my mistakes: sex outside of marriage only satisfies the flesh; it really does "cheapen" it emotionally, if not at first, when you change partner. You may say that you're intending to marry - so were we - but until you both commit publicly to one another, a lot can change, and breaking up with someone you've shared something so intimate with is harder.

I may not like the rule about pre-marital sex, but I realise now it's there only for our benefit...

Hey god'sgirl.Paul said a lot about sexual immorality; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ,1corinthians 6:18, Ephesians 5:3-4...that is why i think my friend focused on Paul....

It says fornicators will not enter the Kingdom of God. They didn't have premarital sex really because people got married at an early age.

Could you cite the verses you use?

Paul does talk about immorality but I don't believe that is always Paul's main point. I just find it odd that this person is trying to make a case by saying, "Paul doesn't address this!" rather than looking at the overall story of the Bible. Paul doesn't address a lot of things, if you think about it.

"For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality" 1 Thessalonians 4:3, NASB

In 1 Thessalonians 4:3 Paul uses the Greek word "porneia" which in English translates into "illicit sexual intercourse, i.e. fornication (pre-marital sex), adultery, homosexuality, etc."

Jesus uses this same word in Matthew 19:9.

This word appears abundantly in the NT, clearly showing that God's view is that sex outside of a marriage between a man and a woman is sin.

when people have sex before marriage the probability of them disrespecting each other after marriage is high. abstaining is the best advice.
