Christmas in Aussie...hot hot hot!!

I'm always interested in different countries/cultures and wonder what Christmas time is like in other countries..



In Australia it is summer and H O T to say the least, so the traditional hot lunch is usually replaced by cold salads chicken ham or the hugely popular seafood lunch...fish and chips down the beach or a bbq in a park or the backyard at home...gift giving is traditionally on the Christmas day morning not Christmas Eve which is European (I think)....

Well, I'm not going to speak for the whole of the U.S. - just northern California. It is generally warm here. And by warm I mean in the mid 50's to low 60's. Sometimes rain but usually not.

A beach barbeque sounds terrific, but if I were to do that here we'd need lots of outer coverings for the fog and wind at the beach.

Depending on the part of TX you are in and the weather, it may be cold or hot.



One of the traditional foods for many families here are tamales. There is also the traditional hams, turkeys, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and the never ending muched talked about, fruit cake.

Oh yes! I forgot about the Christmas fruit cake...AND plum pudding with brandy sauce.....AND pavlova AND fruit salad and cream/ice cream....................:peace:

hello,

i am from a traditional mexican american family. We make tamales way ahead of time, and eat them thru the holiday. Our traditional meal for thanksgiving is the turkey, of course, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoe pies, vegies, lots of bread and an assortment of pies. Years ago when our mother was alive we would alltravel from wherever we lived and gather for the holidays. She is gone now, and although some of us still gather together, most of the time, we have our meals with our own families. We are somewhat scattered but we still manage to meet suring the year for birthdays and other celebrations. In these days the economic days, travel is much more difficult.



Never been outside of the US but I dream about Australia and is one place i would lve to visit.

Pavlova is an egg meringue based desert. The meringue is made from eggwhites and fine sugar whipped till it forms a stiff mixture and then spread onto a flat tray to bake in an oven .

The cooled flat cake of meringue is then garnished with fresh or tinned, sliced fruits and berries and topped with whipped cream.

Chinese gooseberries or as we call them Kiwi fruit is often used sliced as a garnish, along with fresh strawberries.

My mother used vary this dish by making a stack of thin meringue circular pieces and fill the gaps between with whipped cream and fresh fruit.

YUM! Stunning to look at, difficult to slice, but definately DELICIOUS! to eat.

Apparently an Australian hotel chef designed the desert and named it after Pavlova the famous ballerina.

I used to send plastic egg shaped containers( purchased in Aussie supermarkets) of meringue mix to Japan years ago to a Kiw i(New Zealander) friend Richard Vendetti who was in the US Marines based there.

He missed the taste of Pavlova so I sent the packaged mix to him so he could get a mates wife to cook Pavlova for him.
