The child excitedly clutched the Christmas present to his chest. The box was almost as big as him. His delight in the present was obvious. The huge smile and little fingers tracing the snowmen in wonderment added to the joy in the room. He took his present to every person in the room so all could appreciate his beautiful present. When finally coaxed to open his gift, he exclaimed with glee, a box, I got a BOX. Much later, after the family assured him that even more wonders awaited inside the box, he finally opened it. The previous excitement was nothing to the exultation he felt upon discovering the gifts inside.

How many of us approach relationships like my nephew does Christmas gifts? He was content with the pretty wrapping. For him, the outside was all that mattered. How many of us choose partners based on the packaging? How often do we not explore the true gift inside, but rather clutch the pretty package to ourselves and take it around to show off. Only when circumstances transpire that coax us to peel away the wrappings do we find what is inside. How often have we passed up amazing people because we did not take the time to look beneath the packaging? As we meet new people, is it more important that the box be wrapped in pretty paper or what is contained within?
