I changed my settings today, so I could get a message from Elsie E and just as soon as I did I got an email from some guy who almost insisted that I email him at his personal email address. I didn't answer right away ,but when I did I was going to give that polite we wouldn't make a good match thing. A message popped up that said he had been banned from the site!

I admit I was a little leary anyway, because I had been reading the posts from Lynn and Ian. Thanks guys.

Besides someone having MY email address, is there anything else they could do? I mean, I am so new at all this, would that be opening my computer or something?

I had another email I never thought too much about, but he wanted me to email him also. I answered but told him I wanted to keep it at this site. Never heard another word.

Again, I want to thank all who posted about scammers.

Am I giving too much personal info? Now I'm really leary.

Sandy

Egads - I'm having to wipe the tears from my eyes from so hard.

Lynn, you are compiling all of these for a book, aren't you? This is great copy!

Hmmm... what should it be called?

"Scammers get scammed. The best hits of 2009"?

Suggestions?

Could you believe that guy?!?! And they are ALL like that.

But like you said, Ian - I do have the warning posted. Lol

(Another fun thing to do is wait till you know they're about to ask you for money - you can tell when it's coming cause they'll start talking about some problem they're having. Then, flip it and ask them to send YOU some cash. That shuts them down really quick, too.)

Ha! But I DO need money! I are just a broke itinerant creationist!

That's a good idea! Maybe I could send them a check and get them to cash it for me or somethin?

Oh - another beware. They don't always ask for money. Sometimes they'll say it's their kid's birthday but they can't get them anything (for whatever reason). They'll ask you to send something for their child, and of course, their child has ALWAYS wanted an X box, or an Ipod, or whatever other high dollar amount electronic gadget they can pawn or sell.

Remember that some of these people are well trained at this - they will go after your emotions. When dealing with anyone online, keep your checkbook in your pocket.

This stuff is amazing to me. I had NO IDEA that giving out your personal email could be a serious problem. I guess I had help from above because the first couple of times someone I "talked" with kept insisting on it I didn't give it to them and the conversations stopped. Unfortunately, I then did talk to someone and finally agreed and gave him my email> That was a week ago and so far I haven't heard back from him and nothing weird seems to be happening with my email but I'm pretty naive when it comes to this so THANKS!

I have gotten a similar email. I just block the emails and report them if I suspect scamming. I send a note why I am reporting that person so that the site will check the profile further. I dont have the spunk as Lynn I see that for sure. lol

Ah, but it's a tough call; a lot of people very innocently pitch their email addresses - sometimes even first contact. There are limitations to the communication here, and you have to log on in order to read the email, etc...

For example, in a couple of days, I'll be on the road and I have NO idea when I'll have internet again. When I do, it may be on a borrowed computer, so I'll be accessing my email, but obviously - I won't be visiting christian dating sites on someone else's computer.

The other thing to do is go get a free gmail account devoted JUST for things like giving out your email address here. First, it helps you keep conversations from here separate from your private email so you can keep track of it all, secondly, if there's abuse of your email address, so what? It's a throw-away account.

If you haven't done that already, I'd suggest it: gmail.com

Thats the funniest thing I've seen on here so far!!!

I have also noticed in the short time I've been here that this is the only site (not that I an currently on any others) but have been in the past. That people have very freely share their personal information on their profile.:dunce:

A story from my friend, she knew a guy claimed to be from the States, and he was a member of this site but later got banned. He told her that he is a business and just return from a trip but going to another country for another contract. So when he arrived the new country, he gave the number for the woman to call him, and they started the communication about each other. At the moment, he couldn't tell her the reasons for which he was banned from this site. They started to communicate through their private email addresses. After couple of weeks communication, the guy told her that right after the contract, he is going to visit her in her country. Problem started, he said the company he worked for pay him in check, instead of cash, so he needed the woman to send him some some money for the hotel bill, said that he has spent all the money into the ticket he booked to see her. The woman never sent the money anyway, however, the man behaved ruded to her and cut off communication with her right away. This is my friend's story I really want to share with the people who have fear of God.

People who claim to be Christians really need to be men of their words. I don't know if that man is a sammer to her, but just thought that I want to share with you who loves God.
