I realize that certain countries have tried to scam the system, but economic is a Biblical subject. Basically the main focus of the Bible is to teach people to treat each other with respect. The United States has not always done the best job, but historically The United States has tried to be an upstanding nation that treats people fairly. Other nations want to treat there citizens poorly and therefore the countries stock market preforms poorly.
Those other countries are all about gaining wealth, which is fine but its not fine to treat people poorly so that you can get rich. So other countries have gotten the idea that they will 'double dip' and get rich off of the mistreatment of there own citizens, and then they will sell the products to U.S. consumers. That was one way that other countries were trying to use Americans. Another way Americans were being used is that companies would move out of the United States and build a plant in a country that allowed some type of slave labor. The slave labor would produce the product for the company and then the company would ship the product back into America where the product was sold...and the Americans never expected that they were helping to mistreat people!
There was many, many was that the American people were being deceived, but most of the deception relied on the fact that America allowed companies to produce there products overseas and then ship the product into the country.
President Trump saw this 'back door' that companies were exploiting to enrich themselves, and he slammed the door shut. Basically Trump called the bluff that the companies were saying. He said if 'whatever company' is really treating people in a fair manner, then why not build the plants in America where I know that there are laws to protect people! Trump said that he was not going to allow American citizens to be bamboozled by the greedy companies and he announced that we were going to start charging 'reciprocal tariffs' (which means we are going to treat other countries how they are treating us) and there are countries that want to charge Americans just for the privilege of doing business with them. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/list-of-tariffs-by-country
When Trump announced that 'the giant in the room' (thats the American economy) we wanted to take a step back and look at the business deals. The white house had this to say: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/04/regulating-imports-with-a-reciprocal-tariff-to-rectify-trade-practices-that-contribute-to-large-and-persistent-annual-united-states-goods-trade-deficits/
However the president wanted to be fair so he said that everybody was going to be on a 90 day probationary status, and so far more than 75 countries have admitted that they would be willing to re negotiate https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2025/04/15/will-trump-negotiate-tariffs-these-countries-say-they-want-to-negotiate-fair-deals/
So in short, by announcing the upcoming tariffs it shows that America has selected a leader that cares about the well being of others. If you are one of those people that is thinking that the tariffs is all about who is going to make more money then you are incorrect. The tariffs are about restricting evil from getting rich. For several years there has been a war going on. The war is not between two different countries, rather it is a war that is between good vs- evil, and guess which group of people are getting strangulated when economic tariffs are imposed? Hahahahahaha!
Everything comes at a cost. For many decades all Americans have been giving a portion of their earnings to other countries that are our trading partners without getting a benefit from those earnings. Basically these countries have been stealing that money. But they couldn't do it without the help of our very own government.
Now we have a President that wants to even up the trade discrepancies. It's not going to be easy and will hurt some more than others. But it has to be done. We were headed for swift destruction with the old evil regime. It will take time and during that time the best thing to do is not to panic. Just ride it out. We had to do it before and that was when our government purposely did things to destroy the economy in order to boost their power and line their pockets. This time around we have a President that wants the best for us.
Tariffs have been imposed because Reagan invited the FREE TRADE, and in so doing, manufacturing went overseas where it was more profitable for stockholders to make a buck. Then manufacturing died here. Now we are placing the sled in front of the horse to correct the problem. Blessings and curses. Pros and cons. Rock, Paper, Scissors. It is life outside the Garden of Eden. Things are based more upon consumerism than sense.
I'm not sure where you get the cart before the horse. One of the things Trump is trying to get done is to open up markets in other countries to our goods. If he can do that then it opens up potential profit to be made and existing manufacturing can expand and new manufacturing plants can be built here.
Many of the countries that tariff our exports also don't allow our goods into their countries. And many of the businesses that left the US are being tarrifed so as to encourage them to move back here.
I'm curious W&T how you would put the horse before the cart? Because no matter how it's done every country that stands to loose something is going to fight tooth & nail. So anything they perceive as cutting into their gravy train will have to be forced on them.
I don't believe that things should be coming from the other side of the world that can be made or grown right here.
Nor do I think that stuff here should go to the other side of the world. It just is not earth friendly. It leaves a bigger carbon footprint and is unessential.
Why should we get apples from China and Argentina when we have apples right here in the U.S.? So, I definitely would handle things differently.
But who cares how I would handle it? People will ignore my sense.
You mentioned apples but this applies to most fruits & vegetables. I don't like it but it's the way growers maximize their profits. All growers ship the best they have rather then their lower quality products. The lower quality stuff is usually sold locally. The reason they do that is because it cost the same to ship an inferior item as it does a quality one. The better stuff can be sold elsewhere for a higher price and so more money is made.
So for better or worse when stuff is imported or exported it's always profit driven.
