The slaves did not want to die nor did they want to forsake their pagan "gods" so they 'intermingled' the two 'religions'. So instead of praying to 'saint Peter' folowers of evil santeria claim to be cathloics but they are praying to 'yourkshwamai' (I mad that name up) I watched a video of a guy walk into a 'cathloic shop' and take intrest in a prayer book.
