Paying students to study?!!

Has anyone heard of Fulton County schools in Georgia paying students to attend after school programs? Basically Fulton County is paying middle and high school students to study. This is one of the stupidest things I heard of in awhile. Fulton County believes this "Earn & Learn" program will improve attendance, grades and test scores. They are paying $8 per hr.

I think this is a bad idea. What does this teach our youth? This teaches them that they should work harder when there is a monetary reward available. Every kid likes money! More money means more candy, video games and lip gloss. Schools should be teaching that hard work results in the reward of greater knowledge. Money comes and goes, but knowledge stays forever!

School is a PRIVILEDGE! You go to prepare yourself for everyday life. Every kid has to study in order to achieve good grades. Ask any kid, they are always happy when they get an A on anything. Especially when they study really hard. Studying is hard work but it teaches our youth that hard work pays off. Not just in school, but in everyday life. And you shouldn't do hard work for a silly reward like money. You should do hard work for self-satisfaction. Overcoming difficulty creates confidence! Money is a motivator but it shouldn't be used to motivate our youth in our schools. A firm spanking should....no, just kiddin'!

Money doesn't solve problems, it creates new ones.

Many kids do poorly in school due to lazines, learning disabilities and other reasons. But I believe that it is mainly laziness. Kids lose interest in school simply cause they don't understand the school work. Therefore they don't put forth the required effort to acheive good grades. It is up to parents to make their kids realize that life is not all about playing video games and hanging out with friends. Teachers AND parents need to make their kids realize school is important and they always have a parent or teacher to help them if they are not doing well in school. School is easy once you understand the work.

I was curious as to what other people thought about this idea of paying students to study. You think it's a bad idea? Or do you think it's a great idea?

Real life, for most people, is working for money. Paying students to study teaches them that you put forth effort and get paid for it...thus preparing them for real life, no?

I agree to a certain extent. I feel that if the schools cam up with new and innovative ways for people to learn, it would spark intrest. The money portion I think does make them want to "try" harder, but I think the reason a lot give up is because they are not stimulated. Example, I learned basically the same junk for 8 years. The difference between a remedial class, an advance calss and an AP class, was the amount of homework. No class was any further along than another. AP classes did give you college credit, however, when you are already getting 4-6 hours of homework a night in a remedial class, why would you want to add to that? I think by a lot of schools moving to block scheduling, they are able to aleve some of the bordom, and people are able to graduate earlier, and start working towards their careers. It also helps to sift out some of the bs credits that some schools require you to have (ie electives). I know for me, my senior year was a bunch of classes I didn't need to take, but had to for the credits. None of them have helped equip me for what I am doing now. In fact, most of them I slept through and passed with A's. What does that say about the education system in America?
