Admin	christian music/secular music Posted : 22 Sep, 2007 09:32 AM hi...I am a huge christian metal, hardcore, & punk fan...A lot of religious people feel that rock music is the devils and that all christian hard rock is bad...I have news for them, God created music, not the devil, who also has created the lie that christian rock is evil...my favorite groups are Demon Hunter, Fasedown, Call to Preserve, War of Ages, Decyfer Down, Disciple, Still Remains, As I lay Dying, Underoath, Flyleaf, Seventh Star, Alove for Enemies, Living Sacrifice, Day of Fire, Switchfoot, Reliant k , Pillar, Kutless, Jesus Wept & of course, the mighty P.O.D. There are many others but I want to get this posted. I assure you that coming out of secular music (slipknot,slayer,S.O.D.,hatebreed etc.)before I became a christian, I have to watch what I listen to...I assure you that all the afore mentioned groups have a message of God and about God and Fasedown and Disciple even have scriptures look up that go with the song..I pay very close attention and read lyrics and if the messge isn't there, I will not listen to it....anyone who would like to comment positive or negative, I invite you to comment on this forum because I am interested in how the rest of the church feels about my post...God bless you all Christian Warriors and believers in His eternal truths.. Being a musician I appreciate many styles of music, it's the lyrics I have a problem with, but that's not the issue here. I think lots of people hear the music and automaticaly think the lyrics are related to the secular styles. It's just automatic response. I personally don't care for that style, but I was raised on Beatles, The Who, and the classic bands from the 60's. I'm sure they are good musicians, but again for me I like to sit back and watch Clapton work a strat, or Dave Wekl make the drums look like an art form, I guess what I'm saying, if it glorifies God...rock on brother, as long as we are not stumbling blocks, I see no problem. And yeah I know the Beatles and many of those bands had questionable lyrical content, but just compare them to todays "music" Marylin Manson, etc...Give me a long haired hippie any day..lol, keep rockin man:rocknroll: Post Reply

joy82 View Profile History	christian music/secular music Posted : 10 Apr, 2009 11:22 AM ...its not the music. it's the person who is playing that music and what their intentions and motivations are behind it....that is usually what comes through when you listen to it. If that person is surrendered to Jesus and speaking His truth through the music, then its good. it's kinda like money, whoever hands it's in reflects the heart of the person because of what they do with it. :) that's my thoughts on that. God did create music and for us to sing his praises whether it be through huge choirs in cathedrals or a 3 piece making some holy raucous in a crypt. The fact that the devil has hijacked the power of music is a true shame and so many people believing that it belongs to him is simply giving him more power than he deserves and is threatening to alienate members of the family of God who are praising the same Boss, just in different ways. The crossroads, selling souls for guitar skills, all those rock stories are umbedded in legend, but it is unfortunate for so many secular artists to follow the path of the occult. Jimmy Page owned the house of Aleister Crowley and was heavily into the occult. So if we are serious about what we listen to and enjoy, the Zeppelin is out. So hard to cut those chords. Im confused about those who believe but dont use their faith and fame to spread the word. Tom Araya from Slayer is a catholic but still sings the words, God Hates Us All and so much more hailing Satan and making a chioce for 666. What are we supposed to think? U2 are a Christian band but dont overtly spread the word. They dont want to be labelled as a worship band. Strange things going on here. People with power that could do so much good but dont want to alienate a fan base. What do you reckon? I dont think rock music, especially metal can escape the moshpit image of violence and the anarchy of punkness. I havent been to a christian metal gig and would be interested to see how a crowd rocks out. Post Reply

I used to be extreamly into Metal and punk and going to those shows was a every weekend kinda deal. But the older I get the more I want something deeper. I will always have a heart for it, but its not my main selection anymore. I dont think that music in and of itself is bad, although I think music really has an effect on you and can move you spiritually and emotionally. I mean we can all agree that listening to certain types of music influences the way we feel at times. But with that said I think that some music can depict a certain mood that can stike up negative feelings. For example, there is actually a musical interval called a Tritone and its that interval that makes a song sound dark heavy. I wont go into theory but Most metal bands use it. At one point in time it was actually called diabolus in musica ,which means the Devil in music, because of the mood it depicted. I am not saying that I actually think this interval or chord progression is from the Devil but it does give a dark sterotypical evil feel to a song. And Satan was the author of Music before he fell so he knows music and how it influences people. But even so, I really think that there are some very passionate metal bands out there! I remember listening to Funeral Of God by Zao and just fell into an attitude of worship. Same thing with the song "Forever" by As I lay Dying. I really think that the spirit behind a song is what ultimatly matters. I also had to quit listening to Zepplin for that reason, but honestly was not to upset. I kinda think that they are highly over rated and really arent that good. Post Reply

I loved rock before becoming a christian. once I gave my life to Christ I found some so called christian rock. I was loving it & thought it could help reach the lost. but one thing it did to me was to bring back memories of days past. it set rebellion in my heart & I ended up falling away from the Lord for a while. yes there were several reasons why I fell away but the rebellion was set in my heart through that music. so my point behind saying all of this is to say that there is a spirit behind all music. spirit of hate, spirit of lust, spirit of hatred & so on. I believe that( and this is my opinion) any music that screams that to the point where the words aren't audible anymore is just senceless noise whether or not its hidden behing the label "christian rock" or not. how is anything like that edifying to Christ?! we are in the last days before Christs return so we must guard ourselfes against any fowl spirits. View Profile History	christian music/secular music Posted : 14 May, 2009 02:24 AM I believe that people are drawn to Christ because of who He is and not of any other program or music that church people try to use just to point others to Christ. Although music can be used a lot by God to bring a sinner to Christ, it is still the working of the Holy spirit that convicts one of his sin and need of Christ. indeed God created music for his pleasure and glory and i am thankful for the many hymns and Gospel songs that had been composed by godly men and women who wrote the music from their hearts as they experienced God's grace in their lives. Rock music as i have studied is not music at all because there is no harmony of the elements of music at all. Christian music should be edifying to one's soul and as you listen to it it should bring you to a realization of who god is and what is man. Most if not all rock music, christian or not, exults self rather than God. The singers became the stars rather than God for whom the song is written. It appeals to the emotion which is fleeting and changing. I have heard so called christian rock music and most of them are very shallow in scriptural truths. Lastly, although there is nothing written in the Bible about "christian rock music", the Word of God says that we are to "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3.16. rock for me is not in the above categories of music. Post Reply

Iv narrowed my secular list down to bands like The Dave Matthews Band, Keane, and The fray, not too bad lyrically, and on the christian side I listen to the bands: Turn off the stars, Falling Up, Tenth Avenue North, One Republic, Run Kid Run, some of Red and Jeremy Camps stuff... But Id really like to find more bands... any suggestions? Post Reply

Because after reading your long drawn out statement,you seem to be part of the problem and part of the scenery....just because you don't see the spiritual battle that is raging all around us...oh ye of little faith..wake up o sleeper!
