The Finished Work Of Jesus:
Most people know that the word Gospel means good news. But what exactly is the Good News?
Well, Jesus himself is the Good News. When He came to earth as a man, the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45), He came to fulfill the law of the old covenant, and pay the price for the sins of man. Our sins have their roots in the first Adam, but it is through the last Adam Jesus, that we have been set free from them. Through the finished work of Jesus, we are now established in the new covenant of Grace.
In the beginning of Christs ministry on earth, He entered a synagogue in Nazareth and read the following scripture from the book of Isaiah:
Luke 4:1819
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because he has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
However, in Jesus reading, He left out the last line of the Isaiahs original words. And the day of vengeance of our God. (Isaiah 61:2)
This is significant as it Jesus did not come to show the wrath and justice of God, but instead to demonstrate His Grace and Loving-kindness. According to the Bible, the Law was given to Mosses, but Grace and Truth came as a person our Lord Jesus (John 1:17). Jesus came, not to condemn the world, but rather, to save us all (John 3:17).
The work and life of Jesus came to a climatic ending at the Cross of Calvary. It is on this cross that Jesus bore all our sins and curses, pains and sufferings, diseases and sicknesses. He did all this so that we do not have to bear them. Jesus took onto Himself all the wrath and judgment of God Almighty, so that we might once again, stand righteous and blameless before our Father.
The Bible also says that when Jesus hung on the cross and took on our sins, He became so hideous and deformed, that God in His mercy hid Him from sight by covering the earth with darkness for a whole three hours. Yet, it is not until all the judgments of God have been exhausted that Jesus finally cried out, It is finished! and breathed His last.
What Jesus did on the cross is not just a moving story. It is in fact a divine exchange, in which He swapped His position with us. He did not simply take away all the curses from us, but on top of that, He also gave us all the blessings that belonged to Him. Through His finished work, He in effect gave us His position as the beloved Son of God, so that our Father can bless us unreservedly. Isaiah 53 describes all that Jesus suffered , so that the opposites may be ours.
