A friend of mine and I were discussing if polygamy was something that was allowed by God or not. We both think it's wrong, and that God does not allow it, despite the many of the Jewish Kings being married to more than one woman at a time. I thought there was a passage in the OT that dealt with this issue, but I cannot remember where. Does anyone remember if there is one, or even in the NT.

Thanks

Do you mean Deuteronomy 17:17, where God was giving instructions on the future kings Israel as a nation would have?

There really arent any verses that specifically state that polygamy is wrong for everyone. There are the verses about the king and the deacon, but people could easily say that it only applies to those people, they are a special case. But, the implication of many of the verses below is that one should only have one wife.

As far as all the polygamy that was practiced in the Old Testament, just because they did it, doesnt mean that what they did was right. One thing that gets overlooked is the strife that was caused by having multiple wives.

Genesis 2:24 (KJV)

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Exodus 20:14 (KJV)

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Deuteronomy 5:18 (KJV)

18 Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

Deuteronomy 17:17 (KJV)

17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

Proverbs 5:18 (KJV)

18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

Proverbs 5:19 (KJV)

19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her ******* satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

Malachi 2:14 (KJV)

14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.

Matthew 19:5 (KJV)

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Matthew 19:5 (KJV)

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

1 Corinthians 7:2 (KJV)

2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

Ephesians 5:31 (KJV)

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5:33 (KJV)

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

1 Timothy 3:2 (KJV)

2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

Lol! I can't even find ONE wife and you all are discussing polygamy! What about a concubine? Maybe it would be easier to find one of those?

Kat, Cobbler, gave some very important scriptures regarding God original painting of the kind of marriage He had in mind between a man and a woman. Polygamy was not in God's plans for marriage. The Bible doesn't tell us why He allowed David and the others to have more than one wife, but it may have been due to finnacila reasons of the times. Many of these women were living at home and from poor familes. So maybe He winked at their sins of having many wives, as He did our sins of the past, before He began to enforce the law, maybe He used this as a means to multiply the earth... because there were more women than men. Nevertheless the Bile does not tell us why He allowed this practice.

We are told in Genesis that God created the man then the woman, and brought the woman to the man. It does not say God brought Adam his wives, but ONE woman. Genesis chapter 2:verses 22-25.

I would like to piggy-back on the scripture that Cobbler gave, which these are the commandments and requirements the children of Israel were to follow and look for when selecting a king over them, when they crossed over into the promise land. Maybe this is what you are speaking about.

In Deuteronomy chapter 17: verse 17, God says, Nether shall he (the king) multiply wives to himself, so that his heart will not turn away, neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold." God wanted them to chose a king who would not be distracting by many wives, but have his attention on the caring for the children of Israel and the things of God. Deuteronomy chpater 17" verses 14-20. Moreover, All the men in the Bible didn't have more than one wife.
