I posted this question in Ask a Guy, and I'm posting it here so I can get certain people that I can't get in both forums really can use the help.

Proverbs 17 : 27 said A truely wise person uses few words , a person with understanding is even tempered..

Would someone help me better understand how to explain the meaning of this verse. I want to make sure when I talk with her, that I'm taking the text out of context.

lol...this must be a CDFF Bible verse, this is the second time I have heard someone quote this scripture..lol

The KJV say this, He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of ubderstanding is of an excellent spirit.

Remember, this chapter is comparing and contrasting the wise person with a fool . So when considering the moral , ethical, and spiritual precepts of God, God expect the wise person to have more sense and wisdom than a fool. Therefore, the person who is wise and has knowledge does not speak many words without purpose to a fool who will not understand what is being said in the first place.,

Part B of this verse says that a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit, this is because a wise person has a balance and knows how not to allow a foolish person upset them. The wise speaks with purpose.

Therefore, a wise person with knowledge know how not to speak many words to a foolish person, the get to the point without many words (and if you read the complete chapter it spells out why), nor does a wise person with knowledge allow a foolish person to cause them to get upset about things, becuse the wise person has knowledge enough to know to whom he is speaking to, and therefore has a balance in his how he responses to a foollish person.

Matthew Henry says it like this... "A man may show himself to be a wise man, by the good temper of his mind, and by the good government of his tongue. He is careful when he does speak, to speak to the purpose. God knows his heart, and the folly that is bound there; therefore he cannot be deceived in his judgment as men may be.

Here is a good example of a wise man speaking;

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

That statement takes a whole bible to unfold this particular sentence.
