Heaven/Paradise/Purgatory/Hell/Lake of Fire

A lot of people believe that Hell (Sheol) and the Lake of Fire are one and the same, and Heaven and Paradise are one and the same.

Others believe that each place is different.

And some believe in Purgatory.

My question to you is, how do you interpret what the Bible says on this subject. Please use scripture to back up your points.

Heaven is a place where no man has ever gone.

John 3 vs 13: No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is the Son of Man who is in heaven.

Where I go you cannot come:

John 7 vs 34, john 8 vs 21, John 8 vs 22, John 13 vs 33.

The word hell in the New Testament is used for 3 different words: gehenna- eternal punishment (Matt 5 vs 22)

, hades-the grave (Luke 10 vs 15)

, and tartaros- deepest abyss of Hades where demons are punished (II Peter 2 vs 4).

Just of the top of my head, cause I should be getting ready for work...

Hell = A prison where unbelievers go and stay until the end of this age. There are also some evil spirits locked up there.

Lake of Fire = At the end of this age Satan, and his demons, Hell and all its inhabitants will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.

Paradise = Refers to the new heavens and earth, the next age.

Heaven = Place / Dimension where the throne of God is.

Purgatory = On one hand, wishful thinking, on the other heresy against the finished work of Christ, doesn't exist.

Paradise is used 3 times in scripture in the New Testament.

Luke 23 vs 43, this day thall shalt be with Me in paradaise

II cor 12 vs 4, Apostle Paul talks about a man he knew 14 years ago that was caught up into paradise- whether actually physical or an outer body experience he didn't know. Interesting, Paul didn't seemed to be too "wowed" about it. He bragged about his trials.

Rev 2 vs 7, To him that overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.

The word Paradise is number 3857 in Strong's and it defines the usage as: an Eden, a place of future happiness.

I'm always amazed that when someone asks for scripture reference people ignore it. I try to keep an opened mind but what good is opinion without some kind of scriptural backing.

James replies:

You should try presenting the Scriptures that show that fallen mankind has a will enslaved to sin!

Or try presenting the Scriptures that show that God unconditionally elected a people for Himself before the world was made!

Or try presenting the Scriptures that show that Jesus died specifically for the elect, that God had given Him.

OR, try presenting the Scriptures that show that God grace is irresistible, and that God will CAUSE His elect to persevere to the end.

I estimate that about 20% of Christians will IGNORE and CONTRADICT ANY Scriptures that go against their preconceived ideas.

Sad, but true.......

In Christ,

James

James you should seek out the word to find the truth, because Calvinism is void of truth.

Some people, not mentioning any names, seem to be obsessed about the Calvanism/Arminian debate and will hijack threads to slip in their opinion on it. Seems like they get some form of "rightness" from it. Try and stay focused on the thread at hand. Start your own thread on your favorite subject. Shalom

Hell, Sheol, and Lake of Fire are indeed one and the same. Revelation chapter 14

Heaven and Paradise are one and the same. Paul uses the word Paradise in II Corinthians chapter 12 as being in the third heaven, and of course Jesus uses the word on the cross with the thief, then Abraham with the rich man and Lararus. But it all means the same its all in the translation of the words from Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English from the Old to New Testements.

I have never seen the word purgatory in the Bible, I think the Jehovah Witness and certian other denominations and groups use this word purgatory to describe hell...not a Bible word as far as I know.

The word sheol is an Old Testament word and means grave or abode of the dead and is not in chpt 14 of Rev. As a matter of fact it's not in the New Testament at all. Check a concordance. The word hell is found 4 times in the New Testament, 1 in chpt 1, 1 in chpt 6, and 2 in chpt 20. The word used is 86 in Strong's and reads hades, not gahenna.

OOPS. I meant 4 times in Revelation not 4 times in the New Testament in my last post.
