Judges 1:1

I started reading Judges this morning and something in the first two verses made me think:

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?

2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up. Indeed I have delivered the land into his hand.

Moses and Joshua are both gone. Here the nation asked God something and He replied. How God speaks to us is an interesting topic. Having been reading through the Old Testiment up to this point, I assumed with Moses and Joshua that it was more of a literal voice that God used to respond. In other places in the bible God used dreams or visions or fleece to communicate.

So the question here is how to you think the nation asked God something and how do you think God conveyed that response of Judah being the man?

Me personally, I've always thought it was a combination of them casting lots (as they did many other places to decide who should be picked or go first) and a prophet speaking words of God to them. That is what I always picture happening when I read that.

JMO but sometimes God spoke audibly, sometimes He spoke through His prophets, other times the priests drew lot or used Urrim and Thummin. (http://www.biblicaltheology.com/1sa/09_09_01.html describes those a bit.)
