Has it ever occured to anyone to ever debate the OPPOSITE side of a issue in order to see if your own side can hold water, and/or to see if you can shoot holes in your own? Wouldn't that increase everyone's honesty around here?

Oh, and please don't tell me you don't have to. That wasn't the question. The question is have you ever considered it or actually done it.

Isn't that the way science approaches a theory? One postulates a theory and then does everything they can to disprove it.

To look at scripture that way one would have to put aside tradition and empty themselves of bias and say let the chips fall where they may. My approach to a topic is to write down all the key words that pertain to a particualr subject and then go to a concordance and commentary to try and draw a conclusion. Also, I'll google a subject and find out what the opposite view is and look all all the scriptures they use. Gotta start somewhere. Here's an example: the JW's will come around and say that Jesus isn't God. I'll say show me the scripture you use. They show me 2 and neither are even close. I'll say, is that all you have. They'll say at the moment. OK, when you come back bring me more verses to prove your point. They say OK. When they come back they have nothing and then say, "I didn't think it was that important." They did this several times and then quit coming. I even used their own New World Translation against them. Shalom

Interesting idea! I can not say I have thought of trying it or done it. I may give it a try sometime though.

I have done studies where I look up every occurance of a word or topic. Like ambition. Read about it every time it occurs and see where it leads me as far as conclusions.

I have also thought about as I read straight through the bible left to right, to write down verses relating to various topics. I think sometimes it is hard to find each occurance of a topic when you are looking for that topic.

Yes, I have done this. I don't think I've done it on the Forums, but I have done it in person when talking to people. Or writing a paper for college.

Great post Marlo, Reminds me of the lady I met on here 9 months ago. She told I needed to change and I told her she needed to change. Well, if you are having a Mexican Standoff, well I tell others the truth and they give me thier opinions and if neccesary will talk to my pastor about the problem. I sometimes question many people in my life and in the forums claiming to be Christians if they are truly reborned believers living in the Holy Spirit. Most people believe in God, some do good deeds and works but the Bible clearly tells us that is not the way to Salvation.

In my next post, I put together a little 8 page book called the way to Eternal Life to share with the lost. Can't wait for comments on it.

If people on here have to work to prove their point of view in a post on here, that is not of God. God has no part of confusion! Having a personal relationship with him makes us set apart from others. We know the truth, just like Jesus knew when he left us with the Holy Spirit. :applause:

Good as any place to start:

Acts 17 vs 11- These were more fair-minded (noble) than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so ( NKJ). I know longer take anyones word on anything without weighing it on the scale of scriptures.

I've done debated the opposite side of an issue several times. Usually I don't do it to see if my view holds water or if I can shoot holes in it, but because someone was so adamantly sure they were right and everyone else was wrong... when I get sick of someone tearing others' faith down or saying they can't be saved because they disagree on some point that could be understood more than one way in the Bible, I do sometimes defend the side that person is against though.

I usually learn more about myself and God when I'm arguing against what I believe than when I'm arguing against what everyone else believes. It can be dangerous though. Someone once suggested a debate forum like this to my youth group and several young people were hurt as a result. It takes a certain amount of maturity to look objectively at what you believe, much less to debate the opposite side of the issue.

I think if you just honestly consider your opponents view, and read the study the Scriptures on the point they are making, that you

will understand the other side.

Also, depending on the topic, you have already been of your opponents view in the past.

For instance, in Eschatology, I have been other views in my earlier days, but I have been Amillenialist for years, and I think that view is the most accurate by far.

I like your attempt at getting people to consider others views, but the sad truth is, Christians are only partially renewed, and we still have a sin nature in us.

That translates into Christians refusing to face the facts of the bible sometimes when it is presented to them. God's Word is perfect, but we are not, so it makes sense that there are some parts of the Bible that we would not like.

Christians will flat out ignore parts of the Bible they don't like, and they will also MAKE the Bible contradict itself.

They don't like God being sovereign in election, so they come up with some bizarre interpretation of Romans 9, or they really want to claim some kind of works before God, so they ignore the verses of Scripture that clearly say you can't lose your salvation, and instead rely on a few unclear verses in Hebrews. Their interpretation makes the Bible contradict itself, but they don't care.

So, I like your attempt, your heart is in the right place, but we Christians are still only partially renewed.

In Christ,

James

I have debated for Infant Baptism, and a couple of other lesser issues, but never anything big, like salvation. I only took the other side because no one was there to present it. I probably didn't do as well as someone who believed those things could have done.
