The Mule and the Farmer

This Farmer decided to get him a Mule to help him with his farming. When he found the right Mule that looked healthy and strong and he took him to the farm. Once he took him off the trailer, the mule didnt want to get in the barn. The farmer tried to talk to him and pull him in with a rope, but the mule still hasnt moved a muscle. He finally called a horse trainer to see if he could help with the mule. After arriving, the trainer started looking over the horse and saw a fence post on the ground. He picked up the post and slammed it across his head. The farmer looked at the trainer amazed at what he had just done to his mule. The trainer stood there for awhile observing the mule to see if would make the first step towards the barn. After a few minutes, he picked up the post and struck the mule with the post over his back. The mule dropped to his knees. The farmer started screaming at the trainer that he was hurting his mule. The trainer stopped for a about 5 minutes to see if the Mule would get up and walk. When the Mule finally got up, he still did not want to go in that barn. He took one step and stopped. Finally the farmer said that he was giving up on the Mule and would find a better one. The trainer said lets give it one more try. He picked up the post again and popped him right in the Mules butt. The Mule Jumped and took a step and started listening to the farmer and followed him into the barn.

How can we apply this story in our lives and others. I am sure twosparrows will have some good advise to apply here.

The mule listened to the farmer who hadn't Hit him with a post once. I think the horse trainer was un-necessary. Give the mule a little time --- just because he won't go in the barn immediately is no reason to label him un-fit to plow.

A little patience on the farmer's part would have saved that mule from a lot of hurt.

I think in a lot of ways, humans are like that mule, we are stubborn and refuse to give in to God. So God has to come along a discipline us so we will conform to His will.

My friend calls it "God's Holy 2 x 4". It usually smacks her upside the head.

When one is subborn; talking and coaxing avails little. When one is hard headed and stiff backed, sometimes all they need is a swift kick in the A$$.

But to get 'real horsey' on you, from a trainers perspective :

"Where" and "When" you whack a horse has more to do than how hard.

Whack them in the head and they will go backwards or rear up. Whacking on the side yeilds a plethora of results. Whacking them on the butt results in forward movement or a kick. And you never want to whack them when they are 'thinking' of going forward...that just ruins everything!

Forcing a mule to go into something they refuse to enter usually ends with the animal hurting itself. We have had to sedate them to get them in trailers or barns when they have never been in one.

I know this is unrelated to the larger point, but thought it worth mentioning.

Maybe this si why God calls us head headed, stiffnecked, stubborn, rebellious, and a few other choice names.

It can be said that our human nature can be compared an contrasted as being a cross between a donkey and a horse, which equals a stubborn mule headed person, who needs to be beaten (chasten) into obedience by God. And there are those who will obey willinging in order not to get the beating. Soem care and some don't no matter how God chasten them...

...just saying
