Jobs that might be wrong

Ok, this is probably a better post for the Moral Standards category, but I'm not sure if that gets as many views.

I've been thinking about the idea of some jobs being questionable for Christians to do.

I doubt anyone would have a problem with Christians being doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers, carpenters. And I'm sure most would agree it would be wrong for a Christian to be a stripper, a con artist, a liquor store owner, etc. But what about some of those in the middle? in the grey area?

Are there jobs which may or may not be wrong? Or maybe not wrong but better not being done? Or do not serve a productive use to society? What about a production worker at a brewery? A dealer at a casino? A video game designer? A marketing manager? A telemarketer?

I will apologize in advance if anyone reading does one of those jobs. I'm not trying to offend. I'll offer an experience from my own background. A while back I worked at a consulting company and one of the clients I worked with was a large bank. I worked on their credit card campaigns team from a data perspective. I really hated it, there is nothing good about debt or credit cards and here I was helping put millions of people in more debt. Was there anything illegal about it? Absolutely not, in fact it is what our society holds up as a success. Yet, is it wrong from a Christian morals standard? And should a Christian feel good about helping market the selling of more "stuff" in our already consumeristic society?

So no real question, just throwing something out there for discussion.

I think this falls under the heading of "being led by the Spirit". If a person feels a job is killing them inside, or is having to compromise their own integrity or morality, or if the Holy Spirit is telling them this is not right, then it is time to start looking for something else.

Like being a cow knocker, it is not immoral, but it would affect my spirit and personality in a derogatory way.

I had a chance to make some good money working for the correctional department, but saw how it changed the spirit and personality of some of my friends that became correctional officers and decided it was not in my best interest.

It depends on what you market my friend and sell.

food for thought- grocery stores and gas stations sell beer.

Will you now not buy gas or buy food?

hmmmmmm

Pizza Hutt in Ohio sells beer.

I am against drinking beer and such.

I oppose smoking, yet I have to go to those places that sell those things to get what want.

It is what we do with these things- do we abuse it?

@ Dennis:

Excellent young man.

A few years ago,i could have driven for a beverage company which would have included delivering beer.

I would have had no problem doing the work, for I cannot be responsible for what someone else does with the product i deliver.

Just like the stores selling hunting and fishing equipment.

Each person is responsible for their own actions..

Good points. And I certainly don't have a problem with a restuarant that sells beer and such. But what about being the brand manager at the beer company who has to think of the slogans to sell the beer? And the executive at the advertising agency in charge of making the television ad for the beer? I don't have a problem with having a beer at dinner, but would I want to be the one in charge of promoting it on a national level? Just my rambling thoughts....

A Christian can't be a member of the military, seeing how the overwhelming majority of those in the military are lost (I met one Christian in over 6 yrs in) and the gov't is leading the way for the NWO. A Christian cannot be a part of an unjust "war." Can a Christian take part in "collateral damage?"

TruthSlinger: I certainly have no problems with conscientious objectors. And there are times where military service can bring up questions, I've been there. And even more so now when the government is outsourcing a lot of activities. So that can certainly makes it way into the grey area.

HOWEVER, if I read your comment correctly, there is a vast difference between "jobs that might be wrong" and the way you posed it of "anyone who does this job isn't a Christian". I spent six years in, including the first gulf war, and was a Christian then and knew a lot of other Christians. I just spent the first 9 months of this year in the mid east as a civilian on a military base. I started each day off in a time of prayer with a group of amazing Christian men. Some of the best preaching I have ever heard was by an Army chaplain. I also think you would have to explain how so much of the OT is Israel at war.

I have to agree with trucker. If driving a beer truck was the only job available in order to be able to provide for my family, I'd just have to do it. As I was unloading their order, I'd be tellin' 'em what Jesus was doing in my life.

TruthSlinger, that statement you just slung is not Truth.

Many, many young Christian men are in the military. They're fighting for your freedom----- what you doing for them?

You need to sling that lie out in the ocean and maybe we can forget you said it.

I need to believe in what I do to be motivated to do the job well. So there are some jobs that would be wrong for me. Someone else might have a different perspective or work for a better company and be fine with them.

truthslinger- your statment is not from the word. your entire post is misleading and false.

What of the Red Sea crossing and God's commands to Moses to hold his hands up in battle so the jews would win?

What of david and Golith?

Any one can twist the word around to mean whatever they want it to mean truthslinger. In the past you have been very good at that.

Truthslinger------- My son-in law fought in the gulf war and has shared amazing stories of how God was among and protecting those troops.

How dare you make a statement that a Christian cannot be in the military?

Are you crazy or just mean?

Do you know how many mothers cry out to God every night to protect and bring their Christian sons home safe and in one piece?

Shame on you for saying something so ugly!

Deborah
