repent, Repent, REPENT!!! Repent from what?

I find it curious that I have NOT found the phrase "repent from your sins" in the New Testament. Is this something we have all just assumed? Is this something that has been taught so much that we take it as incontestable? Is there another meaning that agrees with the Gospel?

I think so.....

Are you questioning the presence of a command to repent in the bible? There are several passages with that command, most notably, Acts 2:38. Or are you questioning whether the command to repent is not necessarily a command to repent of sin? If that's the case, what would we be repenting of other than sin?

I agree with Tulip... You're either repenting of sin or repenting of good works... Looking at the context of the various usages of "repent," I think it's quite clear what we must repent of.

NCWestie, I agree with you... repent means to turn, to make a change of mind or heart, to do an about face. It isn't only sin we're repenting of, but the lifestyle and attitudes that led to sin--turning from a self-focused and self-willed life to one focused on and centered around Jesus, and spirit led.

Twosparrows, very good point. I didn't realize the phrase "repent of your sins" wasn't in the Bible. (Now I'm going to go look it up and make sure you're right!)

Repentance does not mean a change of behavior. That actually is really easy to do. Any one of us can change our behavior if theres something in it for us. Repentance means that there is a change of mind or a change of heart with respect to sin.

What is salvation but rescue from the penalty of sin. The penalty of sin is death.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Belief is essential but belief alone will not save. One must have a change of heart over sin that is repentance. In the end, if one does not change their mind over sin, one will not see a need for salvation. If one does not believe what God declared is wrong, how can one change their mind (repent) with respect to these sins. Repentance will lead to a change of action. This is always the case whether one is a Christian or not. People change their minds all the time about something and therefore change how they will act in certain situations. People attempt to quit smoking or lose weight because they have a change of mind as to their health. There would be no need to quit if they did not believe it was harmful.

The crux of the Gospel message is repent and be saved

I still believe there is more to repentance than just repenting of past wrongs. However:

Mt 4:17 "From then on Jesus began to preach, "Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near."' (NLT) "From that time Jesus went about preaching and saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin, for the kingdom of heaven is near." (BBE) Interestingly, GWT says "From then on, Jesus began to tell people, "Turn to God and change the way you think and act, because the kingdom of heaven is near!"'

Mk 1:15 ""The time promised by God has come at last!" he announced. "The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!"' (NLT)

Mt 3:2 "Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near." (NLT), or "Saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin; for the kingdom of heaven is near." (BBE)

Rev 2:16 "Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth." (NLT)

The NLT, BBE, and GWT are all paraphrases. But it is interesting that they would write the phrases as they did.

NC, Are we only saved FROM the penalty of sin? Our relationship with God is restored, we are made new creatures in Christ, and we are raised to walk in newness of life because, I believe, we are saved not only FROM some things, but TO others. Salvation wouldn't be complete if we were only released from our penalty. Through salvation we are given much more.

I think many of us have just swallowed whatever was told us about the word repent and never gave it a second thought. I love my roots in the church I started out in, but they taught you to repent of your sin and get saved again, every time you sinned. I once asked the pastor, does God have a big eraser and blot our name out of the book of life every time we sin? He really didn't have an answer except that you must not have been saved in the first place if you keep on sinning. There is a fine line here ,because we all sin everyday, but to blatantly sin and live a daily lifestyle contrary to the word? Only God knows that person's true position, is all I will ever say about that, because we know there are those who profess to know Him but yet, He rejects them in the end.

The New Testament has two Greek words for "repent"~Cited from Strongs concordance.

3340. metanoeo met-an-o-eh'-o from 3326 and 3539; to think differently or afterwards, i.e. reconsider (morally, feel compunction):--repent.

A compound word. Meta means change noeo means thinking. This word is derived from nous which means mind. So, metanoeo means to change your mind

3338. Metamellomai-metamellomai met-am-el'-lom-ahee from 3326 and the middle voice of 3199; to care afterwards, i.e. regret:--repent (self).

Also a compound word~"meta" =change ~ mellomai=emotion, feel remorse, felt remorse, regret.

One states a change of mind, which is about who Christ is-Luke 13:3, "Except ye repent, ye shall all like-wise perish."

John 3:36-"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life."

John 3:16 is the heart of it-"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Luke 13:5-"I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

Acts 16:31- They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be savedyou and your household.

Romans 10-9-10- If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Ephesians 1:7- "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace."

When we repent and change our mind about Christ, come to him as a lost sheep, he provides everything through His BLOOD. You cannot change your mind about Him and not repent. Faith and repentance are the same, they are not two separate decisions and the fact that a person surrenders their life to Christ shows that he has changed his mind towards his sin of unbelief, salvation and God.

God did not say feel emotions when you do this. It may or may not be an emotional or feeling thing. Jesus never mentioned the word repent to Nicodemus, only to believe in Him. Jesus preached repentance as a gospel of grace and only that.

The same thing would be Him commanding us to love our enemy, that is an act of faith and grace or we would all be doomed.

John said our sins are forgiven, present tense~1 John 2:12-I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.

1 John 2:1-My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1 John 2:3-And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

What commandments if He knew we would sin and need His advocate grace?

Matthew 22:37-41-Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like to it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments."

Again, this is an act of obedience to His commandment by faith and grace, not repenting daily or feeling some emotions.

Romans 13:10-Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Should we just practice sinning then? Here's the balance and proof of repenting and knowing Christ.

Romans 6:14-For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

This truth actually exposes the false doctrine of limited atonement and the elect lie. Mankind is in the eyes of the father already saved and his sins where already forgiven, when he repents from the lordship of satan to the lordship of Jesus, He receives the remisson of his sins. The forgiveness of sins applies to christians.
