Christian "concepts" not found in the bible
Posted : 28 Nov, 2010 08:09 PM

Something that has always interested me are concepts that we Christians use that are not directly found in the bible vs things that are.

There are things that are directly stated or defined in the bible. We "shall not steal". Love is defined in 1 Cor 13. There are things that Jesus directly teaches us, like the Beatitudes in Mt 5.

Constrast those with things that are not directly found.

The "rapture" is not mentioned - yes you can build a case for it, but the term is never used.

"Personal relationship with Jesus" is never found. Again you might be able to build a case for it, but the term and thus an exact definition is not available.

"Pre-tribulation vs Post tribulation" again concepts.

"Gods personal will for your life"

What are some other terms/concepts like this that you can think of?

lol...had to throw that last one in there didn't ya'? There have been a lot of debates on here about this, and I have kinda of a hybrid belief about the whole thing, but I've been asking the "no-free-will" people to explain these chapters/verses for me, and no one has given it a shot yet, so maybe you can help me?

It's just a term we've all heard in which the term itself is not in the bible. I can't say I have a researched/educated position which to defend. I'll say I guess we do have free will only because thats "whats been taught to me".

Trucker

Great list! Thanks!

The reason I threw these out there is specifically they do not have a biblical definition. They still may be right, but they are concepts that we patch together through various scriptures and logical thought. BUT, because they don't have a specific definition, people end up with varying degrees of what one of those terms mean. Example: "Personal relationship with Jesus". What does that mean? Oh, person X will say X, person Y says Y, person Z says Z, and they may all well overlap to some degree, but they will also conflict to some degree, or not overlap as much as possible. So then people start judging others based on THEIR definition. Oh you don't have a "personal relationship with Jesus" that meets up to my definition, thus..... well you get my point.

I am very definition driven. I have spent the last 10 years in database marketing. I would have marketing managers ask for a list of people to market to from the database. They would say, "hey could I have a list"? We'll sure, but what does that list look like? Oh, you know a list of .... Ok how about so more detail so I can write the code.

Same thing applies. I've heard people throw terms out there in reference to a problem like "lay it at the foot of the Cross brother". Well how exactly do I do that? So, my frustration with these vague terms that have no biblical reference.

@Shawn, great topic! And about definitions .... you are so right; without concrete definitions how do we really know what anyone really means when they speak.

@DHTM, I feel the same way (I think)

....I believe predestination and free will compliment each other, they work together as a 'team' used by God. I think most people want things in a neat little package. It has to be this or that or be a mulitple of 3,7,or 12...lol

@Shawn

Yeah, I'm just a little desperate for an explanation. We should always be questioning our beliefs, and "free will" is a pretty influential one. I need to know if I have it wrong:laugh:.
