"The damage so far has come from the mud but with dry, hot weather and strong winds forecast over the next few days, the environmental disaster is expected to spread.
Environmentalists said high levels of arsenic and mercury, which can cause cancer, had been found in water polluted by the ooze and that, if airborne, this could enter the human respiratory system."
"Greenpeace warned of arsenic, chromium and excessive mercury in the water, which could be absorbed by fish, as well as cause long term environmental damage. Levels of arsenic in water taken from Kolontar on Tuesday were 25 times higher than the legal drinking water limit. Herwig Schuster, a Greenpeace chemist, said the arsenic level was double what is usually contained in such red sludge.
Barbara Szalai Szita, who lives in Devecser, said: If I spend 30 minutes outside, I get a foul taste in my mouth and my tongue feels strange.
All life in the nearby Marcal river has been killed and dead fish were seen floating into the Danube."
Like the Gulf BP Oil Blowout Disaster, the Toxic Red Sludge may be a kind of reminder from the Lord that we are approaching the time when Revelation 9: 1-5 and Revelation 14: 1-5 are fully fulfilled. However, it could also be that the BP Oil Blowout and the Toxic Red Sludge, and maybe some other disasters still to come very soon, are part of the physical manifestations of what is predicted to happen in Bible prophecy. This would mean that these prophecies are dealing with events in the spiritual realm, with God's judgment on false doctrines in the churches and with his bringing some church Christians out of these errors in doctrines through the fire of the tribulation. Read the rest of the Fifth Trumpet Judgment, on the time of the scorpions and the Sixth Trumpet Judgment on the time of the serpents.
Revelation 9: 1-5 "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
Revelation 14: 2-4: "And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
3. And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
4. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood."
If the BP Oil Blow Out in the Gulf appears to have no further dire effects on life in the ocean or on the climate and people living near the Gulf and in the Midwest and other areas of the U.S. where weather patterns typically bring Gulf air and water, then some Christians may say it has no relation to Bible prophecy. They may also claim that since the BP disaster did not cause thousands of Americans to die and did not cause climate change due to the destruction of the Gulf Loop Current and the warm Atlantic current, that this was a "Chicken Little" warning by those who said it is related to Bible prophecy. The could say we are like the boy who cried "Wolf," when there was no wolf around.
Its interesting the way the mainstream media dealt with the Gulf Oil Blowout. They consistently called it an "Oil Spill," as though it was an amount of oil "spilled" into the Gulf of Mexico that could be cleaned up in a few months or so.
But calling it an oil spill is not accurate. It was an oil blowout, since oil and gas under great pressure eventually came bursting out when BP drilled a hole into the pool, perhaps into an oil volcano on the sea bed.
There have been oil blowouts on land. The Spindletop Oil Well in southeast Texas in 1901 blew crude oil into the air above the derrick at about 100,000 barrels per day. But the oil pool under pressure that fed the blowout apparently was not as large as that under the BP Gulf well and the Spindletop oil blow out slowed and the well was capped in nine days.
Those who see us as the ones who have cried "Wolf" about the BP "Oil Spill" may say the same thing if the Toxic Red Sludge all empties into the large Danube and then appears to be diluted and made harmless by the huge amount of water in that river. The danger of the Red Sludge drying and causing a toxic cloud that can cause cancer, though, is something that only time will reveal is true or not.
