What is a tesimony?

I been listening to peoples testimonies over the last couple of weeks and months at church and a web site called, I Am Second. I am not judging these people salvation, only God knows whom He is saving. But when listening to someones testimony I would think or hope you could at least hear some semblance of the gospel message in their story. A lost person should be able to hear a testimony and know how to get saved as if he were being witnessed to by hearing a conversion story. When some one is in a crummy situation, and wants better things to happen to them that does not sound like a salvation experience. Asking to be saved out of a difficult time that is a result of bad choices or what life has dealt you is not the gospel. And that's what I have been hearing. There is nothing about examining self in the light of God's Law, no contrition for sin, no broken heart or sorrow for Whom they offended, no confession of sin or crying out in repentance, nothing about a Savior paying the price, no humbling of ones self before the throne of God asking for mercy in any of these testimonies. I find this some what troubling. I do hear good stories, but not how they got saved. A testimony is suppose to be how a person came to Christ, right? I don't think it needs all of those elements, but the absence of all those elements and more leaves me scratching my head as to what they are saying and why. Whether or not these people are saved is not my call and that is not what I am saying here.

What I am asking is what are key elements that every testimony should have?

I know people are going to twist my words out of context, so again let me be clear here, I do not care to judge anyones salvation, that is between them and the LORD, what I want to know is what should be included in a persons testimony when they are sharing their salvation experience? And even though every ones experience is different the means by which anyone gets saved is the same, so there should be some common elements in their story.

Persons state of being before they were saved.

What circumstances brought them to Christ.

How they continued in the faith after conversion.

Those three elements I would say are what are required in a testimony.

The things that led up to your salvation and how it actually took place.

giving the honor and glory to God the Father for the miracle of salvation in your life.

sometimes I hear testimonies that honor the devil because they put so much emphasis on who they were prior to conversion.

it's all about God's grace n mercy ;)

All really Good stuff shared here...In 12 Step Reovery Programs and Celebrate Recovery in some Churches...When Testimony is given, it is based in 3's...

12 Step Programs use What it was like, What Happened, What its like now...The intire Recovery Program of 12 steps and 12 Priciples are all about Finding GOD...and are based in the Beatitudes...GOD is so Awesome...

Celebrate Recovery uses the same but also aligns it with Scripture ~ Where I came to GOD or He met me where I was as I was, What happened, ( Conversion ) and The Blessings Received...

All Testimonies are similar in some way...

I totally relate, understand and agree with what you have written here. I to have listened to countless Testimonies and sometimes wonder. But that is just a thought and not truth.

I do know that what one person speaks and shares not everyone will relate to it...BUT...there is always ONE person that Message is for...Praise GOD......xo

Hello everyone:

I believe a persons testimony is to be about Yehua, who Yeshua is and what He is to me.

Most people tell what Yeshua has done to them, for them and through them, yet the whole time never proclaiming WHo He is.

The reason Yeshua does anything,to us,for us and through us is because of Who He is.

Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

I hope everyone has a Blessed and safe weekend,Especially Miss Jude.

Shalom and Chesed:

St.George

A testimony has to include a statement of fact and evidence in support of the fact. It is also a declaration of Truth such as the Ten Commandments or the Arc of the Covenant Ex. 16:34; 25:16.

If testimony is a topic in the word of God, then we can find examples in the word of God.

Here is part of Paul's testimony: 2nd Cor11: 18 Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.

19 For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise.

20 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.

21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.

22 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I.

23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?

30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.

31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

32 In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:

33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands.

1 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.

3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)

4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.

6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
