Question about the glory of God

I don't think we can define the glory of the Lord to one specific attribute. His glory can be seen in most anything... creation, the heavens, the earth, etc.

Question about the glory of God

@ Mark:

The Glory of YHWH is that He is the Supreme authority of all eternity.

His glory is the He is:

Omnipotent

Omniscient

Omnipresent

Isa 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Isa 48:11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

Even throughout eternity we will be totally dependent upon Him..

Shalom and Chesed;

St.George

Question about the glory of God

All those things give Him glory, yes...but what is it? I mean...I know what our word "glory" means by definition. I guess I'm just wondering what it is to God. What is so important about it to Him? He's always doing things "for His glory", but why? Just to feed His ego? I don't know why I've been wondering about this. My current theory is that He does these "things" to give Himself credibility to His creation. You know...like proof that He is what He says He is and does what He says He will do, so people will believe and obey Him. Anyway, just wanted to hear some thoughts. Keep it comin' guys.

I've heard glory means "to give credit". God wants all the credit (glory) for everything. I think that is very important to Him.

Question about the glory of God

Webster's 1828 Dictionary says glory comes from the Hebrew word kabod which means weight.

From Easton's Dictionary:

(1.) Abundance, wealth, treasure, and hence honour (Psa_49:12); glory (Gen_31:1; Mat_4:8; Rev_21:24, Rev_21:26).

(2.) Honour, dignity (1Ki_3:13; Heb_2:7 1Pe_1:24); of God (Psa_19:1; Psa_29:1); of the mind or heart (Gen_49:6; Psa_7:5; Act_2:46).

(3.) Splendour, brightness, majesty (Gen_45:13; Isa_4:5; Act_22:11; 2Co_3:7); of Jehovah (Isa_59:19; Isa_60:1; 2Th_1:9).

(4.) The glorious moral attributes, the infinite perfections of God (Isa_40:5; Act_7:2; Rom_1:23; Rom_9:23; Eph_1:12). Jesus is the brightness of the Father's glory (Heb_1:3; Joh_1:14; Joh_2:11).

(5.) The bliss of heaven (Rom_2:7, Rom_2:10; Rom_5:2; Rom_8:18; Heb_2:10; 1Pe_5:1, 1Pe_5:10).

(6.) The phrase Give glory to God (Jos_7:19; Jer_13:16) is a Hebrew idiom meaning, Confess your sins. The words of the Jews to the blind man, Give God the praise (Joh_9:24), are an adjuration to confess. They are equivalent to, Confess that you are an impostor, Give God the glory by speaking the truth; for they denied that a miracle had been wrought.

It was my turn to cut and paste something I think.

Question about the glory of God

Good answer Thunder, Mark in everyday terms the glory of God is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

When you go back to the old testatment, the cloud by day was a manifestation of the Glory of God, the fire by night was a manifestation of the Glory of God,

You cans see reference to it when the priest went into the temple:

Many times when man encounters the Glory of

God in manifestation man would not be able to stand.

Ex 16:10 And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

Ex 40:35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Nu 16:42 And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.

1Ki 8:11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

Acts 2:4 is also a manifestation of the glory of God

There are times it is referring to the anointing or power of

God

Question about the glory of God

Yeah but...I think it must be talking about two different kinds of glory or something. If God is doing things for "His glory" then it means that He's doing it for the Holy Spirit?

Question about the glory of God

Thanks Thunder for posting Webster's 1828 definition :applause:

When I think of God's glory I immediately think of Ex 33 where Moses asked God to reveal His glory

Exo 33:18 Moses said, "Please show me your glory."

Exo 33:19 And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD.' And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

Exo 33:20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live."

Exo 33:21 And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock,

Exo 33:22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

Exo 33:23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen."

I have heard scholars say that by doing this God allowed Moses to see Creation and everything that had happened in the past (hence, see my back) so that Moses could then write the first books of the bible.
